Description
Set immediately after the events of Godzilla vs Megaguirus, Godzilla is back and on the rampage. There's nothing left that can stop the monster, until a visitor from another dimension is pulled through to hopefully do what no one else can...end Godzilla's reign of terror for good! It's the King of the Monsters vs. The Guardian of the Universe!Godzilla © Toho Studios
Gamera © Daiei Motion Picture Company
Story and artwork © Sam Messerly (me)
This is a fan work.
The comic was drawn traditionally using mechanical pencil (sketching), Precise Rolling Ball v5 Extra Fine (lineart), and Sharpie marker (for panel frames). Afterwards, I scanned it and then I used Adobe Photoshop Elements in order to do the grayscale shading.

I guess from my perspective I honestly didn't feel like Gamera won on this deal, at least overall, but I appreciate anyone who can see what I was going for here Trust me I had several irate G-Fans who tore me a new one for "daring" to let Godzilla technically lose.....you know, because that's never happened before. But thank you lots for giving it a look! It's an old piece of work and kinda hard for me to look at now that I've learned how to actually use a tablet better, but I appreciate you guys for giving it a read.

Very well done, and while im a little disturbed by godzilla's death (in the sense that he blew up and that he actually dies) i totally understand why you chose to end it the way you did. (though godzilla has been to space before and withstood the pressure change )
Really REALLY loved the ghost godzilla idea! Puts a interesting spin on the story which is fanscinating and refreshing from the normal one wins one dies kinda thing, though i would have liked to see more struggle in gamera's side to try and fight off godzillas spirit.
the only other thing that bothered me was that mothra can speak, since its usually the shobijin that does the speaking for her, but that is something i can easily overlook

Thanks, and those are all fair critiques. basically the reason for a lot of those little adjustments, especially Mothra and the ending, was in the interest of time. I had to keep the issue to 50 pages or less, so I just had the chibi Mothra speak for the Shobijin like it did in the one scene of Spacegodzilla on the beach. But I knew it was touchy ground picking a definitive "winner", even if Godzilla is more popular. The funniest part was I did this YEARS before the Death Match version of this fight on Youtube, and they actually used some of my ideas, hopefully by coincidence but still, it was pretty funny. Thanks for giving it a read!

To quote a famous comic book character: "Nothing ends. Nothing ever ends."
I'm sure they'll keep battling each other until one of them falls.

It's actually ... a rather pleasant comic book. I would have liked a bit more of characterization for the two aside from hero-villain, although maybe because my favorite movies are where Godzilla was more heroic (like the newest one) while for Gamera my favorite was 'Super Monster' where he was... far less heroic, let's say.
Maybe if that version were the one of GMK I'd have cheered more for Gamera (that and Monthra)
Curiosly, of all the Kaju you depicted, my favorite was here Monthra, maybe because she was allowed to talk and overall have a gentle idea. While I found weird how Godzilla was killed by Gamera considering that version had shrugged off a (very unrealistic) black hole, I liked the strategy of forcing Godzilla in a areal battle and the fact his spirit would seek revenge... well, nice. I felt sad for the characters, even though it was meant to be bittersweet.
Still, very enjoyable as a story, if not too short, and you know how to draw the monsters, especially give them an hint of characterization with some brief shots. Bravo

To diss it would be a lie on my side and a pathetic attempt to troll you. Neither are worthy as it's good At least I had fun reading it, even despite those points, but mostly because the comic was 'hindered' by its format (being a one shot) and for how I'd have played the fight. But your intent came up nicely ^_^

KaijuKid In reply to AllYourBass [2014-07-06 06:38:46 +0000 UTC]
Sadly the one-shots can't be very long, mostly because of my other commitments, but also it's an expense thing. I print off a couple dozen copies of each one shot every year to take to G-Fest and give to friends, and unfortunately when they get too long it becomes too expensive for me to run off all the copies, so 50 pages tends to be the max. The only exception is "Godzilla:Triumphant" which is my ongoing web comic. Hopefully someone else will tke up the challenge and make a longer, fuller G vs G comic, because I would be happy to read it

But still the result of what you wrote was enjoyable. My only real change would have been to use the GMK Godzilla as he is the evilest AND the one who went against Guardians like Gamera
I know I have been reading it, so far Godzilla: Thriumphant is being enjoyable.
Sorry if this question sounds weird, but are you looking forward the Death Battle video between the two Kaiju?

What a way to to end a comic.
I always hoped to see a fight like this, and I finally did. Originally Kadokawa Pictures had approached Toho about an idea for a Godzilla vs Gamera crossover film, but Toho rejected the idea.
It's nice to see that someone like you actually turned this idea into a reality by making a fan comic.
Awesome work.

All very kind of you to say, thank you. I was one of those frustrated fans who had always wanted SOMEBODY to make it into a graphic novel story since a media version was never forthcoming, but seeing none I had to be proactive. I really had hopes that it would inspire other artists to do their own twists on it, but any comic is a long commitment, this one took me about 4 months.

Funny thing is I was ripping off without realizing I was ripping off. kaijusamurai has a fusion of these two he made before mine, but when I realized what I'd done it was too late in the game to change anything, so I left it, but technically he gets the credit for it. I do feel though this was the best ending I could have gone with, I didn't want to pick favorites and piss on fans but it still did a number anyway XD LOTS of angry Godzilla fans leapt down my throat over this. But you can't please everybody.

Great comic and though it's a tie. I disagree with that since I think Godzilla would win. All the stuff Godzilla has done makes Gamera an amateur.
Surviving standing in the center of a black hole and causing it to collapse just by being in it. (Godzilla vs Megaguirus)
Being hit directly in the chest with a ball of energy at Absolute Zero and surviving with nothing but a small gash. This was one of the weaker Godzilla's. (Godzilla against Mechagodzilla.)
Regenerated from nothing but a beating heart. This was one of the weakest Godzilla's. (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack!)
Took on Marvel's Fantastic Four and Avengers and left with no damage whatsoever. (Marvel Godzilla comics.)
Proven to be superior in strength to Thor. (Marvel Godzilla.)
Capable of destroying a meteor that was at least 100 miles across. (Godzilla: Final Wars.)
Threw 30,000 ton Kumonga over the horizon. (Godzilla: Final Wars)
Atomic Breath stated to be as hot as the sun. (Godzilla vs King Kong and Godzilla 2000.)
Gets his spine severed in two and continues fighting on like nothing happened. (Godzilla vs Destoroyah.)
Lived in a volcano for almost a decade. (Terror of Mechagodzilla.)
Also I heard Godzilla is omnipotent and that his Spiral Ray Beam is much stronger than the Big Bang. Also Gamera had his own hand cut off and couldn't even regenerate it back. So yeah. Godzilla wins.
Has Gamera ever done any of that stuff?

Oh really? Well, maybe in later 60s and 70s movies, but the Godzilla I'm taking inspiration from here is the Millennium series Godzilla who, frankly, was just a menace. He may have inadvertently done some good, but he was still definitely a bad guy. As for them being friends, yeah that was in the works originally but I just decided it would be too cliche and not very satisfying to have them start fighting, have a third party monster show up and have them become allies. It was just more satisfying to have them fight to the death, but thanks for giving it a read. I encourage anyone to make a team up story though, obviously Godzilla and Gamera need more stories together.

I appreciate that very much, believe me, I knew going in that there would be some upset fans over some of my choices here but I honestly didn't want to alienate anybody, just try and tell a good story. I love Godzilla in both roles of hero and villain, but I think what's nice is that he can be flexible enough to be a villain when needed, so thank you for seeing my intentions. Now I'll be busy for a while on the Double Feature, but I hope that it goes over well thanks again.
