The best way to chop up a classic Japanese film? Put a likeable actor in the part. I love both versions of 54 and 84, but there's always been something about Raymond Burr's contribution to 1985 that I've always loved even if practically did nothing but make a pretty speech at the end.Related content

Reportedly, New World wanted to dub and re-edit the film into a tongue-in-cheek parody, but Raymond Burr, taking the message of the original Godzilla very seriously, convinced them to keep the film relatively serious and delivered all of his lines in a straightforward and serious manner that was meant to be respectful to the film and the character of Godzilla.
so quite frankly, I greatly appreciate that.

Me too, the current fanbase doesn't regard him much but I don't think a lot of them understand how important Burr was to legitimizing and inspiring a lot of love for the Big G back in the day. I appreciate the Japanese cut of 84 but it still seriously misses something without his big speech at the end, just adds so much weight to the narrative.

You know, the American distributors were originally gonna make a new script that would've made Godzilla into a parody/comedy. The main reason that didn't happen? Raymond Burr hated the idea, taking Godzilla as a nuclear metaphor seriously.
Thank God for Mr. Burr.

This is extremely powerful. I always liked the character of Steve Martin and how he is affected by Godzilla and how his philosophy changes after witnessing his first attack and how he has accepted and understands the monster. Very good work

Very nice of you to say, no matter the faults of the English versions I have always loved the Martin character. It's to me a sign of how a good actor can carry a half-assed idea and make it something better, in this case Americanizing Gojira. It's just a fun alternative outlook on what's always going to be a great story.

As a kid I never understood what the hell that dragon sculpt meant. Hell, hardly anyone did. It's just fan speculation that it was something that he picked up when he was in Japan during Godzilla's first attack. They never confirm that, but it does seem the most logical. As a kid was totally lost on that part of the film. I actually might have thought, that the stone was calling to Godzilla. Sort of like how the stone was calling Godzilla in the very first Dark Horse Godzilla comic. I was a dumb kid I guess.

Yeah, I love his work in Goji 85, he brings class to the U.S. scenes they added in, & that speech at the end always gets me :3

Abso-friggin-lutely, thus why I love both versions, the Japanese for the original take on the movie and Burr's presence as a comforting, familiar voice to relate the terror.
