Description Reptile Monster
ZILLA

HEIGHT: 50 meters
MASS: 15,000 metric tons

BIO:
In the bleary summer of 1998, thunderous footsteps shook the streets of New York City, and a shrieking roar shattered windows. Buildings were smashed, landmarks pulverized, fish trucks....eaten?
Headlines blared "GODZILLA TAKES A BITE OUT OF THE BIG APPLE!," "KING OF THE MONSTERS IN NYC!," and vendors lined the streets selling shirts declaring "Godzilla Was Here!" and photographs were taken in the massive footprints left in the monster's wake.
Of course, within days, it was all too obvious that Godzilla had NOT attacked New York, had NOT dug tunnels throughout the city, laid 100 eggs in Madison Square Garden, or died from 6 Tomahawk missles on the Brooklyn Bridge. It was instead a beast later known as "Zilla," or "Godzilla In Name Only" by the Kaiju Zoological and Enthusiast community, had chosen the metropolis as a place to lay its eggs and find food (WHY is subject to question). Despite the fact that the King of the Monsters had NOT died at the hands of the US Airforce, they sure liked to believe he did, and the announcements to the contrary were severely downplayed in the media.
Regardless, Biologist Nick Tatopolous knew that there was a very, VERY good chance that not all of the creature's eggs were destroyed in the blast that obliterated the nest. Leading a small search party, Nick discovered a lone egg. Hatching and imprinting on the scientist, "Zilla Jr," as it came to be nicknamed, began to follow Nick with incredible loyalty and intelligence, proving itself to be not only an efficient and agile fighter, but a benevolent kaiju at that.
The real question remained, however, as to where the original came from. That answer came in the form of Phillip Roche, and his protege', Monique Dupre. Part of a French Special Forces sector, the two were charged by their superiors to "clean up a mess" left from a series of experiments conducted in French Polynesia, were 5 "G-Cell Mutations" had escaped after a catastrophic accident (it is believed that S.C.A.L.E., a pro-kaiju rights organization/eco terrorist cell, was involved in these events). Nick Tatopolous, forming the H.E.A.T. team, hunted down all the remaining mutations, with Zilla's help, of course.
After a particularly traumatic event in Alaska, Zilla was later taken to Monster Island, where he would spend the remainder of his life...MOST of it, anyway...

ABILITIES/ASPECTS:
- Can run at 200 MPH
- Burrowing ability rivals Baragon's
- Can spit radiation-charged fire
- Very light healing factor
- Razor-whip tail
- Agility makes up for lack of resistance to heavy weapon fire

Zilla is referred to as male for no other reason than our culture tends to perceive Godzilla as male - she laid eggs through parthenogenesis, the CGI model was given female genitals, and she's a lizard, so we can more-or-less use real world lizards as a base. Now that the two are more concretely separate characters, that's no longer an issue.

Komodothrax fertilized the egg herself - something real komodo dragons are capable of in the absence of a male - so Jr's sex isn't really a factor there.

At *best* both are hermaphroditic, or Sr. is female while Jr. is male, since some parthenogenetic lizards give birth to only male offspring in the absence of a mate.

I'm going with female though, because I'm used to it, because we need more female kaiju, and because no one's going to deprive me of lesbian lizards.

Zilla was a hermaphrodite in the '98 film, though.

She was capable of self-fertilization, but she was still female, same as whiptails.

Oh. I thought Zilla was male: online, it states that Toho confirmed him as male with the ability of asexual reproduction.

A lot of people will claim that because they don't like girl-cooties in their franchise.

Why don't they want more female kaiju in the franchise? Personally, I don't mind it, and I like Biollante, Megaguirus, and Mothra as female kaiju. If anything, we need more of them.

The generous answer is that because Godzilla himself is usually considered masculine, they're put off by an adaptation changing that. But that doesn't really hold much water, seeing as how Zilla prettymuch stopped being seen as a version of Godzilla very, very quickly.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind a female Godzilla, to be honest. I mean, Toho has done more drastic changes, like making Ghidorah good in GMK, or giving Mothra scythe-like appendages in King of the Monsters, and people were okay with it.

Breaking or flat out ignoring canon if it's not AU never sat well with me at all. Call me a canon whore or whatever but that's just how the dice rolled. I use canon as a basis for any fandom-related writing I do so that's probably where it came from.

Zilla is canonically male (and I strictly refer to Junior). That's not a cultural thing. That's a fact. Toho sets the rules for their universe, just like every other content creator (pro or amateur) sets the rules for their own universes. What they say, goes, and all incarnations of Godzilla ('98 incarnations included) are male. The '98 film was a mess, even I know that, but the follow-up animated series was more in line with Toho's vision to the point where Junior isn't called Zilla Jr. over in Japan but Godzilla Jr. The Japanese love him but hate the one who became Cyber-Zilla. I just call him Zilla Jr. to avoid confusion with the other Godzilla Jr., the one Destoroyah killed. People are free to break the rules as they see fit but that doesn't make them change.

I'm doing a little rule-breaking myself. I'm writing an AU humanized Godzilla story called Kaiju City where Destoroyah, a confirmed male, ended up getting genderswapped because I got the inspiration from some awesome gijinka pics. He was depicted as female in one. I liked it enough where he's female in the story and it helped equalize the two teams in the gender ratio. For the Earth Defenders, the female members are Mothra and a human ally. If I had left Destoroyah alone, the sole female member in the Mutant/Alien Faction would've been Biollante so I decided to genderswap our favorite killer crustacean to fit the images I'm drawing inspiration from and to make the ratio 3:2 to match the Defenders, even though one of the Faction's members (SpaceGodzilla) is one of two free agents at the moment. I just need to get him introduced to the story proper first, then Ghidorah is free to recruit him. So I'm not above twisting canon a bit if it's for AU purposes. Aside from that, Kaiju City remains faithful to film canon with the AU storyline beginning at a divergence point in Godzilla vs Destoroyah.

By all means, see Junior the way you want but canon states he's male. Wish fulfillment isn't going to change that.

Sometimes Death of the Author is okay. For example: When people try to claim that a mutated iguana who lays eggs has to be male, it's okay to disregard them, regardless of authority.

The original one, yes. Junior, from the animated series, was a lot better received by fans and Toho alike so Toho refers to him as Godzilla Jr.  I just call him Zilla Jr. to avoid confusion with the other Godzilla Jr., the one that killed by Destoroyah.

I found out through TV Tropes and tropers tend to have their facts pretty damn straight. Toho's made it no secret that Zilla Sr. is a joke to them (hence the "battle" in Godzilla 2000). That's no big surprise. The Japanese audience and Toho both found Godzilla: The Animated Series to be vastly superior to the film. Mainly because Godzilla was allowed to be Godzilla (fire breath, physical toughness, all the jazz that made the original great) and he had a good array of kaiju in his rogues gallery like the original did, many of which were reasonable facsimiles to Toho kaiju.

If you don't believe me, there's nothing stopping you from researching it on your own. It bugs me when people ask for confirmation on something like this from the person bringing the information to their attention because it comes off as lazy and shows they don't want to put the time and effort into it.

About Zilla, I refuse to believe that he survived being shot by torpedoes, and that he can reproduce asexually while still claiming to be male. So here's what I've come up with. The submarines did kill Zilla, but before that happened, he and another Zilla, a female, mated and the mother stayed to guard the nest, i'll be it lazily, while the male went off to find food. Now you might be asking, "How could there be two of them?", well considering that they are in a movie where they can walk through New York City and just suddenly disappear, are you really gonna be surprised by the idea that there're two of these things? If you still don't believe me, then feel free to go back to following the words of an obnoxious scientist who used human pregnancy tests to on a lizard.

Zilla dos not make any sense officially Zilla is considered an "asexual male," which doesn't make sense. i remember reading multiple times that Dean Devlin said Zilla was a male that had the ability to reproduce asexually. Toho says the same thing as well, since they maintain that all incarnations of Godzilla are male, and Zilla was created as an incarnation of Godzilla. Zilla must at the very least have female reproductive characteristics, but officially he is a male monster.Only POSSIBLE explanation [theory]: Zilla WAS a male, but since there were no females, he changed gender and then layed the eggs [asexually, on top of it all] and then changed back to a boy just so he can be called 'KING.' The only bad thing about it is that Zilla's offspring were all sterile, meaning that that is a terrible thing to do (and makes no sense because if it reproduced asexually, it would mean its children would be exact clones, and therefore WOULD be able to reproduce like Zilla) and a terrible evolutionary thing, but I guess evolution would have nothing to do with that since the Zilla species was just a few iguanas that instead of dying from cancer grew to 60 meters tall in a couple of decades.

The way I see it Theory 2 :, Zilla was born male, but no mates existed at all. So, due to his heavily-irradiated and rapidly-evolving genes, he spontaneously developed female reproductive characteristics (since Patrick Tatapoulos confirmed Zilla has female genitalia) and fertilized his eggs with his already existing male sexual characteristics.

Zilla I assume is like the evolution of an entire species over millions of years in one individual. Zilla produced hundreds of eggs so that there would be a breeding population of Zillas, consisting of both male and female members. Because Zilla evolves and his genes mutate so rapidly, his children were not all clones of him, but genetically different creatures due to rapid embryonic mutation or some other scientifically-impossible process. Since Zilla's offspring would be expected to breed with each other (incestuous, I know, but not rare in nature), Zilla Junior was simply a male member of the species. Since all of his siblings were killed, Zilla Junior had no females to mate with and was sterile.
See, this is what it all boils down to: "Zilla is realistic"

also a creature that size could not exist in any way if its only eating fish
(and if it does not have bones out of titanium it would crush under his own weigth -> Square Cube Law <-

also the proportions of zilla are wrong no Lizard would look like a DINOSAUR!!!!! it also could not jump or climb buildings. Zilla also has the head of a LEGUAN on the bod of a THEROPOD is so wrong and can not exist in nature.

well thats the explenation

Technically Zilla could've reproduced asexually the only catch was that Zilla would've had to be a female

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Godzillafan964 In reply to MapsNStuff [2015-06-18 13:12:44 +0000 UTC]

But if we're thinking realistically, how did Zilla come back after being shot by those torpedoes. If the movie took itself seriously, they would've had there be two Zillas. But clearly they didn't care and just expected us to believe that this frail looking monster survived being shot by torpedoes, and not missiles, which can reproduce asexually and still be male only because the scientist told us, and not because he actually looked into it.
