Darkrai, Zilla (2004) was appearantly confirmed by director Ryuhei Kitamura to have used some kind of atomic acid breath, so logically, since the IDW Zilla belongs to his Zilla-character and is based upon it, the IDW Zilla should have some kind of breath like the first Zilla in Final Wars too. But I guess this could also be similar to the case of the creature (Godzilla 1998) which Zilla is based upon where the creature only had a wind Power Breath but his son had an atomic fire breath, maybe it's some kind of minor evolution where a new generation of the species lose or add something to its "character". Anyway, It's anybody's guess, unless it is explained in the comic of course!

The quote was "Β A lot of people like that design and abilities from the animated series in the late '90s, so it's a matter of trying to present the monster in a favorable way. We're going with the same monster that appeared in Final Wars, though. So no breath weapons, but a lot of sharp claws."

It was confirmed in an interview that the IDW Zilla will not have an atomic breath.

Idea + Design Works Publishing, better known as just IDW, is an American publishing corporation that mainly deals in comics.

Yes, exactly, but I still find it a bit weird how they base the IDW Zilla upon Zilla (2004) but take away its "acidic fire breath" (as Kitamura called it).

IDW probably missed that comment and assumed FW's fire breath was a call-back to Godzilla 1998's "Power Breath".

Zilla belongs to Toho, and IDW has full access to Toho's kaiju library, so... yeah.

WOW! I can't wait to buy this! Thanks for all these little teasers Matt!
Final Wars Zilla didn't have atomic breath. It was just another explosion like the one with the car in 1998... at least that's the logical explanation, since Zilla didn't use it anywhere else than when behind those buildings. Also, the first incarnation of Zilla was Zilla 1998, not Zilla 2004.
VERY BIG NEWS:
Shogo Tomiyama (the man in charge of the Godzilla franchise) and Ryuhei Kitamura (director of Godzilla Final Wars) of Toho CONFIRMED the Zilla name change in an interview and an article from a reliable source. Here are the links:
[link]
[link] (Under the "Monster Alert!" section)
Basically, here is what they say:
(Shogo Tomiyama Interview)
PENNY BLOOD (the interviewer): "You were quoted as saying, βthat you renamed Hollywoodβs 1998 version of the monster βZillaβ because they took the God out of Godzilla.β When I read that quote, I interpreted it to be a slam against Hollywoodβs Godzilla (1998.) Iβm getting the impression now that your statement was referring to the βspiritual interpretationβ of Godzilla in Japan verses Hollywoodβs βmonster interpretation.β It really wasnβt meant as a putdown. Is that correct?"
SHOGO TOMIYAMA: "Yes, because Hollywoodβs Godzilla is just a normal monster Heβs not a God. Hollywood treated Godzilla as a live monster or live animal. They shot him down with missiles and all that."
There it is, an official statement from Toho confirming the Zilla Name Change. Here is the link again: [link]
Now for Ryuhei Kitamura. In the article, it says:
(Godzilla Final Wars Pre-release article)
"Director Ryuhei Kitamura also announced that the Hollywood CGI Godzilla 'Zilla' will also make an appearance. The 1998 Hollywood Godzilla movie is often sited by fans as βthe worst Godzilla movie everβ and Kitamura stated that he renamed the creature βZillaβ because Hollywood ''had taken the 'God' out of Godzilla'' for fans. " (This is what it says in the article, published just before the release of Godzilla Final Wars; I've grown to forgive the 1998 film and love Zilla)
Here's the link for this again: [link] (Under the "Monster Alert!" section)
So Kitamura DID rename the 1998 monster, he didn't introduce a "new monster" with the "Hollywood Godzilla's" design. These two official statements, accompained with the cancelled GODZILLA 1998 trademark and logos plus the existance of Zilla 2004's trademark and logo is complete evidence of the Zilla name change being true, and not a myth, matter of speculation, or up to interpretation. This is such wonderful news!

Actually I went to his Wiki to gather some evidence... he just put the interview and didn't change anything else. He still says the name change is a myth. I guess people can't change.

It's weird though, this Zilla (2013) incarnation is based upon the first incarnation of its character, Zilla (2004), yet (if I've understood it correctly) this IDW Zilla doesn't have an atomic breath but the Final Wars Zilla did. Although I'm a little confused and/or curious about this, I still find it pretty interesting.

OMG... the memories! The memories! ... unfortunately, this isn't Zilla Jr., it's the Zilla from Final Wars and it's been confirmed he has no breath weapon. Still, I for one am looking forward to the rematch!

I like the effect of the eyes in the tidal wave, but they look a little too cute for my taste. They could be a little bit more narrowed otherwise, nice use of that effect.

Is this version based on the '98 movie's Godzilla? or the one from the 90's cartoon (which was based on the movie)?
π: 0 β©: 2
The493Darkrai In reply to SEwing0109 [2013-06-12 21:22:37 +0000 UTC]
It's another Zilla incarnation. It's based on the Godzilla Final Wars one (because of the size) but it has the same design as the 1998 Zilla.

SEwing0109 In reply to The493Darkrai [2013-06-12 22:07:58 +0000 UTC]
Oh... Okay. So, Final Wars is a variation of '98, and this is a variation of Final Wars.
