This is great!
I'm not too sure about the hairy look on the T-Rex, though.Β  I mean, I'll buy the theory that T-Rex babies had downy feathers, but lost them as they grew up.

KaijuSamurai In reply to Numbuh88 [2013-10-22 19:46:22 +0000 UTC]

One of T. Rex's closest relatives, Yutyrannus, was covered in feathers, and it was nearly as large as Rex itself. While evidence has been discovered to support that Rex indeed was scaled (small, bumpy scales not unlike an iguana's have been found to be on the tail and hind legs), it's not much of a stretch to hypothesize that Tyrannosaurus could have had feathers itself. That being said, many paleontologists have been pointing out recently a major problem with our perception of dinosaurs - we've been "shrink-wrapping" them.Β

All of this is true, but you're neglecting one crucial fact; Scales are not bare skin. Feathers can't simply grow from the scales, or the gaps between them. In order for T.rex to have feathers, it would need large patches of bare skin for them to grow from. Not an impossible scenario, but not really likely.

KaijuSamurai In reply to Mecha-GREGOLE [2013-10-23 04:17:51 +0000 UTC]

Then there has so be something we're missing. Modern bird species have both scales and feathers...feathers which protrude from bare skin. Perhaps the same is true with dinosaurs?

The really freaky thing is that Triceratops had quills. Honest to God GIANT QUILLS.

Birds have both scales and feathers, but not in the same places. A theropod with both would most likely need large naked patches for the feathers to grow from.

Feathered basal tyrannosauroids like dilong most likely lacked scales altogether, or only had them at their extremities, which means that they already have different integument from T.rex. They were related, but very distantly.

I'm not one of those people who rejects radical new ideas about dinosaurs, or feels that they've stopped being giant reptiles - To be honest, I think the feather mane looks rather fetching. But I think a lot of people run too far with these new discoveries without showing proper scientific skepticism. The feathered sauropods I've heard proposed come to mind...

Triceratops' quills are interesting on their own, but the hypothesis that intrigues me the most is the notion that it may have been omnivorous, like a giant pig.

Awesome! (and what's with the hair on the T-Rex?)

KaijuSamurai In reply to ThexSilverxWolf [2013-10-22 19:42:35 +0000 UTC]

Those be feathers! Many species of carnivorous dinosaurs have overwhelming evidence that they were covered in feathers, and several of T. Rex's close relatives, such as Yutyrannus, are known to have plumage. Ergo, it's not much of a stretch to imagine that Tyrannosaurus Rex could have had feathers as well, at least over part of its body.

ThexSilverxWolf In reply to KaijuSamurai [2013-10-23 00:11:20 +0000 UTC]

I just looked it back and noticed the same thing on the Pterodactyl (or is that fur?) and while I understand your reasoning, I'm still one to picture the T-Rex as a giant, scaly lizard.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KaijuSamurai In reply to ThexSilverxWolf [2013-10-23 04:14:34 +0000 UTC]

It'll take time. It took a multi-million-dollar movie to show everyone that Tyrannosaurus didn't drag its tail

Pterosaur species of several varieties did indeed have fur. Pteranodon? Hard to say.

Oh my frickin God! Now THESE are Power Rangers. I don't care if people think it's childish, but I absolutely love dinosaurs and anything pertaining to them and the eras before and after them. Sabre-toothed tiger and Wooly Mammoth Rangers look awesome. T-Rex would be an obvious favourite and of course he HAS to be the Red Ranger lol.
Really great work on this dude.

Fantastic job on this MMPR print. Two questions I have to ask. First, will you do a Green Ranger print down the road? Second, have you considered offering your mad art skills to the upcoming MMPR comic that is being published?
