   History:

Talih was born in a litter of 2, in the heart of a family bound by stringent religious doctrines, where every belief was etched into the fabric of their lives with unwavering certainty. From a young age, Talih felt the weight of these convictions pressing down on him more and more year after year, shaping his identity in ways he couldn't comprehend. His twin brother didn’t seem to share his convictions, being instead much more open to the religion peering into his daily life and point of view, which only made the runty cub feel even more alone in this strange world that felt much too tight for him to fit in.

Growing up with a hormonal imbalance only added layers to his struggle, making the already tumultuous journey of self-discovery even more challenging. While other cubs of his home pride navigated the maze of adolescence with relative ease, Talih found himself grappling with a sense of dissonance between his body and his soul; the unusual thickening of his voice, the growth of body hair, features that a female by birth wasn’t meant to have - yet, there he was, expressing all of this phenotype with little to no idea as to why the Gods were putting through this tribulation. Why couldn’t he just be an ordinary lioness? Why did he feel so dissonant from his own skin, from his own reflection? Why did it not reflect the same image everyone around him seemed to see in him, but he couldn’t see it himself?

Amidst the echoes of dogma that reverberated through his household, Talih dared to confront his truth. He knew that the gender assigned to him at birth did not align with the lion he was growing out to be. Though he thought his brother Ikeno would embrace his cause and remain by his side, he didn’t, being the first one to decline the possibility of not seeing him as his sister anymore. Menelik, his half brother, was the most flexible of them all, not quite verbalizing his acceptance but neither did he seem judgemental of his younger sibling, accepting that every individual was different. His mother and father, however, cackled over his truth, finding it an immense absurd to ever consider their sweet Talika to be anything different from what they knew. They wouldn’t accept his new name, nor his identity, and would insist on addressing him with female pronouns he knew didn’t ever truly belong to him.

“Don’t be like that, Talika” His mother would coo, trying to pull him into a hug “You’re my sweet girl, it doesn’t matter if the gods made you a little different, you’ll always be my daughter.”

His father, much less affectionate and talkative than his mother, would hardly ever address the issue, yet his silent denial was also a dagger to the young boy’s chest.

“Mother, the Gods made me different… look at me. Do you see a lioness when you look at me?!” Talih would insist, trying to bottle up the years of suppressed rage and angst inside him.

“Of course I do! You’re my only daughter, my sweet girl.” She would say, and try to engage into any sort of affection with him, only to be pushed away.

“Then you don’t see me at all.”

His family, entrenched in their rigid beliefs, could not fathom Talih's decision to leave their homelands. To them, it was an affront to everything they held sacred, a deviation from the path they had laid out for him. Despite his attempts to bridge the chasm between them, their acceptance remained elusive, leaving Talih feeling like a stranger in his own home.

It was a moment of hard times for the pride, since the climate had changed drastically and brought snow onto the once warm savannah lands. Supplies were scarce; herds had moved away and many were starting to starve. Talih tried to convice the pride to move, at least temporarily, to look for resources elsewhere since many of the elder were suffering. However, his intention to help wasn't seen as such, but as an attempt to rise a riot against the current King at the time, and thus had him exiled. Under the harsh looks of disapproval from his pridemates, many pointing at him as a freak, an aberration, something that should've never come to be, his parents watched him leave in silence; his mother and brother, with some sadness in their eyes, wishing they didn't need to watch him go. His father, however, watched him sternly, his gaze scolding him in a dead silence that felt deafening just to look back.

Through the harsh winter, he left them behind, struggling to make a living for himself but adapting to the challenges that showed as the days went by.

In the embrace of new beginnings, Talih found solace in the lonely life of a wanderer, a stranger in a strange land; what to many would be a burden, to him, it was a beacon of light in the darkness of rejection. Though scars from his past lingered, he forged ahead with resilience, knowing that his journey was a testament to his true self and to whom he could never be in his home pride.
