Description
Comission for , their specter(?) themed rangers. I am really sorry for the long delay, but some personal projects forced their way up in the priorities and well, life got me busy too but now I post most of the comissions scheduled, only one more missing.I actually enjoyed doing this team, pretty nice concept you had. I tried to make the helms skull like how you wanted them, but they all seemed basically the same so I had to add the ears and other details to be able to tell them appart. Hope you like them.

I can dig these designs. Very reminiscent of the Psycho Rangers.

Nice.
It's always lovely too see that I'm not the only one who likes female Red Rangers.
Saban, Toei… If we fans can make female Red Rangers, why can't you?!

Kaiserf11 In reply to OptimusV42 [2018-04-15 23:00:53 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah, I agree. Personally I believe having female Red Rangers show how the Rangers are supposed to be equal in all senses, regardless of their race or gender or anything really. So when they make female rangers that lead, like Time Force Pink or Yellow Wild Force (early in the series) I get excited, because though red is probably my favorite color, it also shows you don't have to be THE Red Ranger to be the leader of the team. They really missed an opportunity in Samurai because if you ask me, the female red ranger, even with the little screen time she had, was a much more interesting character and many many times a better leader (at least potentially, she had a lot of room to improve) than the red ranger they stuck with.
Now looking it outside the universe, you have to consider they adapt it from Sentai and for some reason, Sentai has never made a female red ranger, at least not as a regular member of the team. So if Saban wanted to do one, they would have to either have it in an original work like Hyperforce, or would have to invest A LOT to get a new suit done and reshoot the battle scenes, and we all know they will not do that, just take the "Legen War" for example, they could and SHOULD've reshoot it all so it would have consistency with the ranger teams, instead they simply used existing footage that showed Sentai teams never adapted to PR. So, I don't think they would do it, they ar ejust too damn lazy or care too little to do it.

Wow. That's a big answer there, buddy. Hehe.
But, I agree with you on the first point, to the point I feel that the Red Ranger has become so symbolic for being the leader, that I fear it's too late to try something that features another color as the leader. But also, and this may just be me, but when I write my own scripts, I' always find myself drawn to writing about a story that has a girl as the main protagonist, even though I'm a boy, myself. I don't know why, but I have an easier time relating to leading girls than leading boys. I guess it must from me being a Brony, as well. Hehe. As for Lauren, the female Red Samurai Ranger, I totally agree with you. She got to little time, and she could have gone through more development.
As for the second point, I know that Power Rangers are adapted from Super Sentai, and that is why I put out that question to both Saban and Toei. And yeah, the "legend War" was really lazy. In fact, I want to call the entire Megaforce series, officially, the laziest Power Rangers series ever made. I actually felt that using the Gokaiger suits as a Power-Up was lazy, as well. And besides, we never got an explanation as to why they couldn't stay in that form for very long. And for the record, I hate it when the heroes can only stay transformed for a limited time. It really puts a lot of stress on them. I tell you, if I wrote the script for Super Megaforce, I would have let the Goseiger powers get destroyed of useless, and have them replaced with the Gokaiger suits. That would have made a lot more sense.
I actually wrote a journal entry recently about how Power Rangers can be improved. Please check it out, if you haven't already.
And just as some final points…
I have actually myself written a premise for a Power Rangers series where the Rangers are professional racing drivers, competing in Grand Prix championships, while they fight evil monsters. And in that series, I have two siblings, brother and sister, who share the role as Red Ranger. Meaning, when the brother can't join the others in battle, his sister takes on the role as the Red Ranger. But later, he leaves the team, for a while, and appoints his sister as the permanent Red Ranger. And he then later returns, as a new Gold Ranger. Actually, now that I think about it, I have two series that follow this formula, with the first Red Ranger giving his powers to his sister, and then he returns with all new Ranger powers.
And as a final touch… I never imagine any of my fanfics in live action. I always imagine them as animated series or movies, because I love animation, and think it is the perfect medium for really big adventurous stories. And I feel that animation is really one of the best ways for the Power Rangers to go… But, I don't mean that the Live Action Power Rangers series should be replaced by an animated series. Oh, no! I mean that they should exist side by side. After all, who actually says that there can't be more than One Power Rangers series per year?

Lol yours is quite lengthy too.
I agree, having females as Red Ranger could be amazing, having females be leader regardless of their color would be best, but you are right, they have put Red in such high regard that they would not venture to change the formula. But yeah, the whole Megaforce and "Super Megaforce" (god I hate those "super" names) are really the worst, or top three at least, worst series of the franchise. They had the potential to do an amazing season, specially with Super Megaforce (it hurts to say that "super" name), I agree with you, doing something like destroying the powers would've been better than what they did, the power up thing was quite stupid imo.
I will go check that journal of yours. As for me, I don't have trouble writing for either male or female leader, I focus mostly on the story of the season as a whole though, I don't think I've written for a season length story, not for PR at least. And yeah, there could very well be more than one ranger season a year, I honestly thought they would do that when they got back from Saban, considering all the seasons they missed and all the ones they never did (pre Zyuranger) and animation would be amazing, I can picture having both really, one live action and one animated, with a completely original team and design and all, but I don't think they will do it.

You hate the "Super"-thing, too? Same here. It's so… What's the word I'm looking for? Cheesy!!! Yeah, that's it. It's very cheesy. I know that the effects and the monsters are quite cheesy, themselves, but that's not the same thing. Cheesy effects is the whole foundation of the Tokusatsu genre.
I didn't say that I can't write about male leaders, I just said that I'm always in some strange way more drawn to writing about female leaders. For me, the story is the most important thing, and even more important are the emotions. I don't like these very simple stories with very simple emotions.
Now that you say it, It would have been awesome if Saban did two series a year, right from the day they got back the Power Rangers. But I do actually fear that it wouldn't work with the pre-Zyuranger series, since the picture quality was less perfect back then, than it is today. It would look kind of weird to see the Rangers as civilians, in modern HD picture quality, and then when they morph, the picture quality would change to an 80's quality. I know that there are modern equipment to clean up the pictures and all of that, but I still think that it would just not work. Which is why I imagine my adaptation of Jetman as animated.
Speaking of which… You're right, Saban would never go on to make their own animated series. Which is why they will need a partner… An animation studio who can take care of the main work, the animation and the story, while they just have to worry about advertising the show. And I actually have a dream about starting up my own animation studio, which would become that partner. I even have some ideas for my own original animated Tokusatsu series.

Yeah, its the most stupid thing they've done. I het it makes a kid excited thinking they'll be major changes and all, but let's be honest, its been 4 "super" seasons already and not a single kid is dumb enough to have not noticed they are basically the same than the originals, so they should already drop that.
And you're right, the pre Zyuranger teams wouldn't work as live action, but if they are too lazy to think of original content, they can adapt those as animation instead. Having an animation studio sounds amazing, hope you can make that dream come true.

That's exactly how I feel about the "Super"-thing. Just because you put an extra word in the title, doesn't make it a new show. As long as you continue the same story, with the same characters, it's still the same series. But I can assure you, that you will not see anything like that with my scripts. It's just stupid.
The only real problem with using animation is that, here in the west, there seems to be this belief that "animation = kids friendly content", which is one of the most stupid thoughts I've ever heard. Because, let's not forget, all of those early short cartoons from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s… They weren't actually made for kids. They were made for a general audience, which was mostly adults. And if you see those cartoons with a very careful eye, you will notice there are some strong elements in them, like when dogcatcher Black Pete takes out a shotgun to shoot Pluto. That's not very child friendly. But that's because at that time, people didn't look at animation as "for kids". It was just another medium, by the side of live action. It was just another technique for making a movie, and with that, I mean any kind of movie. Plenty of Walt Disney's classic movies had very tragic moments. But nowadays, parents get over hysterical if a character gets a paper cut, claiming it to be "too violent".
The only place in the world that doesn't have this attitude towards animation, is Japan. But even there, there is a problem. Although, I must admit, it's more a problem based on your own opinion about Japanese animation, so, I can now only speak my own opinion here. My point is, that the Anime style is, to me anyway, a bit too stiff, with all the limited movements, and how the characters are practically frozen when they talk. And some Anime feature films are, pardon me, quite frankly, ugly. Now, as I said, this is just my own personal opinion. I'm not an Anime hater, but I do feel that the style, in the long run, leaves a little bit too much to be desired.
Eh, hehe… Sorry… I didn't mean to turn this into a mini-rant.
But, as a final note… It would really be nice to have an animation studio, since I feel that animation is something that hasn't really been explored here in Sweden. All I would need, though, is a group of artist, and the cash to start it up. Hehe.

Yeah, Saban is stupid if they think that "Super" trend will work in the long run. About animation I can't go as in depth as you, I don't know that much about its history but I agree that back in the 40s-60s they touched more mature themes without any worry of people crying about it. And you are right, nowadays people are just stupid, thinking a little blood will be violence, that a fight is going too far, people (namely parent), at least the ones in the US who are the ones who complain the most, are really stupid if they want the animation to be all friendship and rainbows, they yell and act outraged for watching a little blood or a mere physical threat on a tv show, like their society (or world society itself for that matter) wasn't violent at all. I personally beilieve is better to have more mature themes and even violence in kids shows because that helps, at least imo, to make them see the world as it truly is so they won't grow up to be the idiots their parents are nowadays.
About anime, I'm not sure what you mean, again, I don't claim to know nearly as much on animation as you do, but when it comes to anime, the animation has a wide range imo, and I'm not a big fan of anime either, but I've noticed that depending on the anime, the animation can be amazing (like attack on titan or death note) or simply crap (like pokemon's latests season). Although they too suffer from the censorship present in the western. Namely big shows like Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya. Both show ar eknown for being quite violent and bloody and that is just amazing because it adds up to their main theme, but since people in the US, the largest market in the west, complains so much for a little blood in their "kids shows" they were forced to basically erase the blood from them. DB Kai is a shame shadow of what DBZ was, mostly because it lost all the blood and the violent and exciting moments that made the original as epic as it was. DB Super for all the good it has (it has plenty of bad too and this includes the bad animation you mentioned), also lost that violence and blood that made the battles feel so real and exciting. Same for Saint Seiya, the original has not be redone yet and I'm glad, but Soul of Gold lacks the same traits DBS lacks, even the Hades Chapter OVAs lost those traits at a minor degree. So they are killing the best shows that have existed and all for what? because they are too lazy to look after their children so they don't harm themselves? or maybe because they (the parents) are stupid to realize the shows display actual fights with actual consequences? Back in the day I wouldn't go around life hitting my friends like a mad child, mostly because it was bad of course, but also becasue I had seen in the shows the damage it could cause, all the blood lose, all the broken bones, etc. But now, they said "no blood, blood is bad, me too stupid" and their kids waht the shows, they see no blood, not even a scratch on the character and what? they think hitting people is fine because there is no consequence, so in the end, they only made things worse.
Sorry for that rant... but tbh, the stupid people that complain for violence and mature themes in kid shows really bother me, I can't understand how an adult can be that stupid to not realize they should actually watch their children and teach them themselves AND most of all, see that those themes will, in the long run, make their children more smart and awake to their actual world because even as children they'll have seen how the world is not all balck and white.
And about the animation studio, I guess here in dA you can find people interested in helping you out, I've seen people from all over the world with different ideas and interests so I guess this is a good place to look for partners. And for the money, why not tryin to set a Patreon? I've seen many youtubers doing that and some people in dA too, and it seems to work well for them, so maybe you could try doing that too?

You don't have to apologise for doing a rant. It happens to me sometimes. When you have something that you want to get of your chest, just do it. I always like to hear from other people with different opinions.
You actually said just the words I as looking for. By toning down on the violence and not showing any consequences from fighting, you're only making the matter worse, because children do need to learn that, and they need to learn it early on, before they have to pick it up on the street, for themselves.
I will be honest with… My knowledge of animation history is specialised on Western animation. Anime is unexplored territory to me.
But when I talked about some Anime movies being "ugly", I was referring to movies like "Spirited Away". There is a scene there where the young girl find some humans who have been turned into humanoid pigs, and that scene is, to my mind, so gross, and it's the animation itself that is gross, and for someone like me, how grew up with more Disney than anything else, the girl's terrified reaction is not appealing at all. Now, I know that not all Anime movies are like that, but those that do end up looking like that, just gross me out. Maybe I'm just too raised in the Western animation style to get it. I don't know.
But I'm mostly annoyed by how Anime characters are just standing still, with other other than their mouths moving, when they talk. And I'm also not so fond of how their mouths open and closes, in the same fashion as a Muppet. I mean, first of all, no person's mouth behaves like that, in real life. Our lips always form different shapes, depending on what word it is we're about to say. And second, no living person stands absolutely and completely still while they talk. We always move around, even when we're just talking. We make gestures, we move our heads around. In short, we move around all the time. Even if we're just standing around and talking.
Whoops… Now I did a little rant… Again! Hehe.
But you might be on to something there, with looking around here for someone who might be interested in starting an animation studio with me. And about Patreon, I've actually been thinking about it, but I'm not sure if my portfolio, which mostly consists of homemade gifs, short premise scripts, and an archive of old Swedish Tv commercials, will be so much to use for a Patreon. And, to be honest… I don't know exactly what Patreon is, or how it works. Eh, hehe.

Well yeah, you're right. As for anime, I repeat, not really a connoisseur here, but I can assure you there are some really great animations out there. I might have seen about 10 animes in my life, DBZ and SS among them, so I'm not really a fan of the genre, but among the few I've seen, I've seen many amazing animations. Spirited away, the movie you mentioned, is quite awful the animation, I agree, I remember started seeing it as a kid and stopped after a few minutes for how awful it looked and though it is revered as a great story, the animation is quite bad imo which is why I've never seen it completely.
About the patreon, I'm not quite sure really, but it seems its a page where you have to create and account, and there people can donate money for you. I've seen it mostly on youtube, those guys are regularly creating content so it works for them. But there is another page, kickstater I believe its the name, that one is a page where you again, create and account, but you set a limit, like the money you need for an specific project. You can upload a video or images of your work for people to be more familiar with it so they can donate. I've seen that done for fan flicks, mostly power ranger related lol, but I've heard it works. Apparently if you don't achieve the goal, the money goes back to the donors, so if you happen to change your mind or for some reason abandon the project, they don't loose their money. You can always look in youtube for videos explaining both sites if you want to know more.

I'm not saying there haven't been any good animation coming from Japan. Oh no. I'm aware that there are plenty of good animated films coming from there. I'm just saying, just like you, that I'm not really a fan. I do agree that the Japanese do know how to tell a story, but I'm not so fond of how stiff the animation looks in television. But I'm not a hater. I don't believe in hating.
Actually, about "Spirited Away"… "Digimon The Movie" is actually animated just like "Spirited Away", which is why I haven't seen it again. In "Digimon The Movie", when Greymon fights Parrotmon when the digidestined were little children, Kari is crying and begging Greymon to stop fighting. That scene irritates me, because they push Kari's sad face too far, making it ugly instead of cute.
Sorry, I just got that scene in my head now.

Okay.
When it comes to comics, I guess I'm more of a Spider-Man guy. Though I'm not a frequent reader.
I actually had a concept for a Power Rangers series based on Batman. But I just couldn't get it to work.
I just have two opinion questions, if that's alright?
1. What would you say about a Power Rangers series with two Ranger teams, competing with each other? Still trying to save the world, but one team has more selfish reasons for doing it.
2. How do you feel about the Kamen Rider series?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kaiserf11 In reply to OptimusV42 [2018-04-18 07:38:51 +0000 UTC]
I like Spiderman too, but I'm not a fan of Marvel, they have a huge mess with thier comics, that's why I don't read them. Not long ago (by comics standards) Spiderman had an amazing event called Spiderverse, I loved it, but waited till it ended and watched it on youtube condensed so I could understand it.
About your questions:
1.- Sounds pretty much like Hexagon. I based my universe partially on Hexagon, sans the conflict, so nasically I only used the idea of a group of past Rangers joining together to start an Agency to help every ranger in existence. Your idea sounds like the main conflict of Hexagon's season. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you stole it or anything, but that is basically how Hexagon reads. One team (the Wind Rangers) would be led by Tommy but seeing his method were going too far, Jason would create his own team (the Thunder Rangers) and the whole idea of the season was both teams clashing due to ideology conflicts. It never came to be since Disney bought PR and they dropped the continuity, during that season at least.
2.- I've never seen a Kamen Rider series. I watched Masked Rider when Saban did it back in the 90's, not much memories there, and I watched KR Dragon Knights when it was aired in the west, but they say the story is quite different to the original KR. So yeah, never seen the original.

The Spiderverse is one sweet concept. I actually tried to do something similar to that with my Power Rangers, but I had a hard time getting it to work.
About my questions…
1. Actually, I see where you are going with your reasoning… But trust me, I'm not talking about bringing back previous Rangers. I'm talking more along the line of two totally new teams, with the same theme. Like, two teams who are both treasure hunters, but with different reasons to hunt down the treasures. Or one team who are vampires, and another team who are vampire hunters. You see where I'm going? Actually, now that I think of it, the Hexagon concept actually sound very inspired by the Secret Wars from the Marvel comics. It sounds like an awesome concept. But I think I'll go for something simpler, for now. Hehe.
2. Actually, story differences between the Japanese original and the Western adaptation is really common for the Kamen Rider series, just like with Power Rangers. Saban's Masked Rider was nothing like the Japanese original series, "Kamen Rider Black RX". They use the same footage with the suit, but Saban turned it into a more comical series, which didn't help it at all. But "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight", on the other hand, changed the story from its Japanese counterpart, "Kamen Rider Ryuki", but didn't make a mess of it. You see, in Ryuki, there is just a big competition between all the Riders, where only one can survive. No main villain, only Rider vs. Rider, with an occasional monster getting in the way. Dragon Knight took the same suit footage, but turned the show into a story of betrayal, with the previous Dragon Knight being tricked by the villain into betraying the other Riders. So it's very different from its counterpart, but unlike Saban, the makers of Dragon Knight showed more respect for the series dramatic tone and kept the show as a drama. Actually, I would like to say that Dragon Knight was actually an improvement over Ryuki, in that, by giving Dragon Knight and actual villain, they filled an empty space that somewhat left Ryuki with too much too ask for.
But, the reason why I asked you about Kamen Rider, was because I'm working on some scripts there as well. But I've been uncertain what to call them… "Kamen Rider", or "Masked Rider". Which do you think sounds better? Maybe "Kamen Rider" is more favoured than "Masked Rider"?

That sounds more interesting, the vampire concept specially. Though when I mentioned Hexagon, the teams where new rangers, only Tommy and Jason would come back, but only as mentors.
Yeah, I knew the concept of Ryuki, just didn't remember the show's name lol But yeah, it seems people at japan felt the same way as you, I saw a youtube video where they commented on KRDK, explaining it was later dubbed for japan and said people liked it better than Ryuki.
I believe Kamen Rider is a more known name, so it could help get the attention of the people who know the franchise or have at least heard of it. I would go with Kamen Rider.

Oh. I guess I missed that part, with Jason and Tommy as mentors. Silly me.
Wow. I knew that the Western fans thought that Dragon Knight was better, but I had no idea that even the Japanese liked it better then Ryuki. That's mighty impressive.
To be honest, I started to lean towards the "Kamen Rider" title, myself. It somewhat sounds more serious, and less common. "Masked Rider" doesn't really have an edge to it, even though that is what the phrase "Kamen Rider" actually means. So… Yeah, I'll go with "Kamen Rider". Thank you, for helping me make up my mind. Hehe. And like you said, more people know of the phrase "Kamen Rider", so it would be idiotic to not use it.
