The oldest of the Mercado Moraza quartet, Gabriel was born in Ansbach, Germany. He was joined by his sisters; Ivelisse when he was 3, Araceli when he was 7, and Isabella when he was 10. Gabriel’s childhood consisted of bouncing between military bases as his father, Silverio, was restationed and his family’s coffee hacienda in Puerto Rico. Despite the back and forth, his family had an amazing support system and he was surrounded with affection. Whenever his father was getting ready to deploy, Silverio drill it into Gabe’s school that in his absence Gabe would be the “man of the house” and to protect his mother, Marcela, and siblings - a lesson that Gabe happily took to heart. Coupled with his willingness to lend a hand around the hacienda and town, Gabe was adored by many.

Maybe that’s why it hurt so much when he saw the flash of fear in his parents’ eyes. A small flame burnt nearby, an effect of his metagene activating, was quickly snuffed out and with it was life as Gabe knew it. Silverio now barely looked at him, when he did - all Gabe saw was scorn, and Marcela was on edge. Not once did he ever hear his parents argue, midnight screaming matches seemed to be the new norm. Gabe grew desperate to return to life before, and even more desperate for his parents’ acceptance. Seeing sidekicks pop up on the news, he and Ivelisse worked together to propose he find a hero to help hone his powers though it was quickly shot down. Instead, he was now visiting doctor after doctor, all promising a cure and all coming up short. His desire to fine tune his powers continued to be ignored with new orange bottles being pushed in front of him. His disbelief gave way to anger and so the arguments started. Silverio found a new doctor who was gaining traction as a pioneer of superhuman studies. This doctor, Adam Donnelly, seemed nice enough and eagerly took on caring for Gabriel, going as far to pay for him to visit his mainland office. Gabe continued to protest, but Donnelly had Silverio wrapped around his finger with promising results. This scared Gabe and the more he was ignored, the angrier he became. Soon, Dr. Donnelly shifted into harsher experiments on Gabe. At a loss over his parents accepting this kind of treatment, Gabe clamored for some kind of hope.

Eager to prove to his parents that he was still worthy of their attention (and in desperate need of an outlet), he made himself a makeshift costume and started fighting crime at night. It was mostly petty crime but it served as a springboard. He aimed to get the attention of the League and then they’d all see him for what he was. And he’d never have to see Dr. Donnelly again.

As he got comfortable, he started venturing outside of his small region and even took up vigilante shenanigans while traveling and visiting family. Eventually, he is recruited to the Team by Emma, a Green Lantern in training. By this point, Gabriel had grown more jaded and had a hard time opening up to the Team. He had a constant fear that they too would cast him out. This would last a few months, especially with the likes of Wally constantly ribbing him, and he slowly started to regain some of his former personality. Still, he made it a point to keep his lives separate and rarely mentioned his civilian life.

This would come back to bite him as he grew more comfortable with them and Dr. Donnelly’s experiments became cruel. Now, it was obvious to him that Donnelly was disgusted by metahumans. He never had any interest in helping. Not knowing just what kind of threat Donnelly was, Gabe informed him he knew he was on to him and would not be receiving “treatment” anymore. Over the next few months, missions kept popping for the Team that seemed simple enough but would end with someone getting hurt and little clues were left specifically for Gabe, alluding to Dr. Donnelly. Deciding to investigate this on his own, Gabe started to isolate himself from the Team. Anyone who reached out to help him was effectively ran off. When Gabe had enough to confront Donnelly, he expected the doctor to be caught unaware, not gleefully taunting him. Physically overpowering Gabe, Donnelly made him an offer or he’d harm the Team and Gabe’s family. Seeing red, Gabe swore that he’d burn him alive. He spent the next few days plotting out how to get Donnelly alone and launch his attack. This attack ended up blowing up in Gabe’s face as he learned Donnelly had been 3 steps ahead the entire time. He walked right into a trap. In his final moments, he realized he was played like an absolute fool. His dream of being recognized as a hero his parents could be proud of was thrown into his face as he now faced down choosing to die to save innocents who would never know his name, and his loved ones would never do what he did. In his final moments, he got to reflect over his only true desire to give it all he had and what he did never mattered.

Gabriel is marked by his strong sense of justice and desire to protect. He is always looking to prove himself, which sometimes leads him into dangerous situations. He’s the first one to step up to the plate in a fight and the last to back down. Lending a helping hand is second nature to him. As a surprise to some, Gabe is great at giving heartfelt compliments. After his powers activated, he hated the way he was written off, and tries to make sure the person he’s complimenting feels seen. He also takes mental stock of what his loved ones interests are so he can keep up (keeping a few snacks in his pockets for wally in case he runs out of energy, memorizing Thais’ fast food orders, ridding the cave of Emma’s pregnancy aversions, etc.)

Unfortunately, like the rest of his siblings, Gabe is also a menace to a degree. He enjoys teasing others and seeing just how riled up they can get. He was also good at coming up with silly dances and would try to get the Team to learn them with him.

On the flipside, it took time for the Team to chisel his better qualities out of him. When stressed, Gabriel has a tendency to self isolate. And while he wanted to get to know them, he also was scared that he’d just let them down.He is quick to anger though relatively slow to act. If angry enough, he develops tunnel vision and it can be hard to shake. He’s had to be restrained by Kaldur and M’gann on occasion. His parents and siblings ultimately got to see the worst of him. Feeling like he had to force his parents to acknowledge he still existed, Gabe would get into screaming matches with them, terrified that if he didn’t, he’d just be erased. This also became something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, in his bid to prove he was still worthy of attention, he ended up burning many of his bridges to the ground.
