None of the images used for this fantasy MK11 character select screen were made by me: I do not own any of those images, nor would I claim them as my own. I found these on google images and used them because they're wonderful and I thought they'd fit with what I had in my mind in terms of how the characters should/could look like. The artists who made them are too many to mention, or unknown to me, but I do love their art and admire their amazing talents. The names and ideas (backstories) for the new characters are mine, with the exception of the name "Cloak".

153 characters for one fighting game seems too much. Especially with 18 guest characters. And some of the pictures you use for existing characters don't really match the character themselves like Kung Lao having a straw hat or Ashrah as Maleficent.

Too many new characters at once is also too much. Sure some of them were minor characters in previous games or other media but they are still new characters in terms of gaming. Some of them aren't even real fighters like Samara and Scorpion's wife. Kana was never established as a member of the Shirai Ryu.

All in all a very unrealistic list. Shorten it down to maybe 50, reduce the guest to 2, and have the new ones (OC and other media) be up to around 10-15 then it would be more reasonable.

Who is Sei from Mortal Kombat (2011)?

Well all of this is totally subjective and you're entitled to your opinions of course.

The reasons why some of the characters look different vary. Kung Lao is impossible to find on google images. You find me a high def 3D image of Kung Lao or someone who even looks like him and I'll thank you for it, cause I searched but couldn't find anything that even resembles him, let alone a real Kung Lao depiction of that quality. Kano, same thing, I ended up using a Mean Machine (Judge Dredd movie) work. And it turns out black people aren't that well represented in these types of artworks, so I couldn't really find a Kai either. Ashrah, same exact problem: impossible to find in this quality. So I had to compromise, and pick images that I thought could at least be reimagined designs for some of them, or represent some alternate costume. Another reason is that I don't necessarily like some of the existing designs for some of the characters. I hate Rain's look for example, and if I had to redesign him, I would probably make him look a lot more like the Rain character from the movie Big Trouble In Little China (the inspiration for MK Rain), or perhaps more like an advanced, royal-looking ninja, as depicted here.

I disagree with wanting less "new" characters, I actually want them to introduce more completely new characters, but that's just my opinion, and since this is my roster, I'll include whomever I want.

Sei is a made up name for the lady in Jade's ending in MK9. Some think she may be Delia, but here, she's her own character; an oneiromancer from the Dreamrealm. Sei is also the name of a Japanese lady of the court who wrote about dreams in her poetry. I happen to like it, so yeah.

Cheers

Ah, that makes sense. Using the actually game image would indeed ruin the overall quality as it would stand REALLY out. And putting some thought into it, I could probably spin out a bunch of ways they would appear that way (the straw hat has retractable blades, Stryker was partially resurrected so he was mechanized).

Turning background characters into good characters is a hit or miss thing. A tarkatan introduced as a baby could become a powerful new character. But Scorpion's wife who had zero hint of fighting capability suddenly fighting alongside/against her husband stretches it a bit.

New characters, however, can start out bad but slowly develop into great characters. Especially if the story plays it right. Or they just have a kickass design like the new MKX characters. That cowboy and his fangirls. But the amount of new should also have some justification in the story.

Hi Chimera495

Yeah the "strange new" looks for some characters could very well represent an alternate costume, or a look related to a certain variation, or some skin or even a different version of the same character from an alternate reality or a new timeline or whatever. Some images (well, actually many of them) are but indications of what the characters could look like. I would prefer Reptile to look more like the traditional ninja, but I couldn't find an image that I felt was "good" enough. That's a weird thing by the way; you'd think it would be easy to come across some high def 3D models made by fans for the many MK ninja, because they're so popular, but that turned out to be rather disappointing. I mainly focussed on artworks made with Zbrush. That's why I had to settle with the humanoid reptilian look for Reptile: that wasn't my first choice at all. Others happen to be spot-on representations of what comes to my mind (at least) when thinking about the direction a character should or could move towards, in terms of looks. A perfect example of this, in my opinion, is the beautiful image I found and used for Shang Tsung. I always wanted Tsung to be reimagined to look more like the ancient, regal looking Chinese sorcerer he was originally designed as, in the first MK game and specifically in the sketches made by John Tobias: clearly inspired by the David Lo Pan character from (again) the Big Trouble in Little China movie. Later on, they drifted away from that idea and Tsung became something different, though I think the image I used for him would be an awesome design for the original MK villain. I would prefer that design over any of his previous (official) ones.

I get your points concerning Kana Hasashi, and you're probably right about her being too tricky to write back into the story, so I'll give you that one, and I do agree with completely new characters having to be written well enough to introduce in a world that is already well-established, with tons of iconic characters. Even minor characters from the many different Mortal Kombat sources that exist can't simply be thrown into the mix and expected to hold their own against the complex backstories that came to be over the years for the main characters. So yeah, this would require some real effort and creativity: to design them visually is probably the easiest part. Then, you'd have to give them all unique fighting styles and special moves that are new, fresh and relevant to the characters. And then, you need to write their backstories in a convincing manner: having them be part of the MK universe, giving them personalities and motives, connecting them to existing characters, times and places, etc. Deciding to simply have existing characters return for every MK game kinda makes a lot of sense when taking all of this into consideration, I know.. but still, adding new characters (or minor ones) does expand the lore and open up new possibilities.

I have written some backstories for some of my own OC's though, if you'd care to read it. In fact, I would love to hear your thoughts on it, since I'm kinda new at writing stuff like that, and I wonder what people actually think of these short backstories: kakarotho.deviantart.com/journ…

Some of the old characters really have potential. Hsu Hao had a descent story and awesome moves. His downside? He looked ugly. Dairou had a descent story and I like his look but his moves didn't quite make sense. Heck I like Hotaru (who has a Japanese girls name) because of his design and his slightly crazy Order-mindset.

I'd love to see characters from other media brought into the games but I think ownership issues prevent that.

In fighting games most especially Mortal Kombat, some characters need to sit out certain games. It would give the new characters a chance to develop because some are supposed to be, you know, dead. Having a lot of new would make sense as long as there is a good balance of returning characters.

Hmm, OCs. If they aren't ninjas, they already have a plus. *Puts on robe and wizard's hat and starts reading*

To be continued......

I recently replayed Deception (after many years), and the game was a lot of fun. The only characters I did not like were Darrius and Kobra, and these were in fact the last characters I added to the roster here. I agree with certain "shitty" characters having potential; simply redesign them: either their looks or their movesets. Dairou and Hotaru are cool characters that deserve another chance. I know about Hotaru's name; I'm always interested in origins, names and backgrounds, etc. D'Vorah is Hebrew and would actually be "Debbie" or "Deborah" in a Latinized version, it's very close to the Arabic word for "bee". Many Arabic names, they just sound cool and exotic; I've used a couple myself for my own characters.

Kano, in my opinion, was awful in Mortal Kombat (2011), he looked too generic and was bottom tier, but when they first revealed him for MKX, it was clear to me that with a little effort and creativity, even a bad character could become pretty damn awesome. I always felt like Kano had a lot of potential anyway; maybe a bit underused throughout the years. Liu Kang same story: I did not like Liu Kang in MK(2011), I thought he looked too bland and he was constantly whining in storymode lol. His new MKX design, especially the old version of him, they actually made him a total badass, as he's supposed to be. So it can be done; a lame character can definitely be turned into something great. Hsu Hao, Drahmin, Dairou, Nitara, or any character that is commonly viewed as dumb and forgettable could be made dope, quite easily I think, even a character like Meat. Though the idea of a dude wearing a motion capture suit could be where we should draw the line.

Yeah, Mokap. Let's see... his suit let's him mimic others? Nah.
The balls absorb light so you only see them? No, that's counter productive.
It was what he was wearing when the invasion began? Boring.

I got nothin' for Mokap. He was probably a joke character even though he was supposed to be a tribute
