Description So this is one of my "original" Mortal Kombat characters. Basically a Naga type of creature. Simply named her Ophidia, after the Clade that includes snakes.

The serpent body I found on google. The torso (including head and arms) is pretty much completely drawn by hand, one pixel at a time. The original sprite came from MK3 Sonya Blade, but there isn't much left of her now. Didn't make her very big on purpose, she's more or less the same size as any other playable character, as she would be a playable character, in the awesome Mortal Kombat game that exists in my head *insert coin*

I think creature characters should probably make it in to the next MK game. At first I wanted to put the torso on a Tarantula's body, but that didn't really work out all that well. This one's pretty badass regardless.

Anyways, I hope you like it!

Yeah imagine having a complete sprite sheet for her.
It can't be done though.
The best way I can think of, to actually do that, would be to make a puppet out of clay, as they did with the Shokans.
Or the modern day equivalent to that: a 3D model.

Why ísn't anybody doing that by the way? Why's everyone always editing sprites? Why's nobody simply repeating the original process of recording real models in funny costumes?

Very cool. I can't rework all of those though. You have to understand, I use MS Paint, I've never worked with anything other than that. Never even used photoshop. I would first have to learn how to use a new programme, get comfortable with it, etc.

Sidenote: I actually prefer having to go through the entire process of manually editing sprites, and zooming in and figuring out what exact color a single pixel should be. In my opinion, 3D models look too.. unrealistic. I don't know, it's weird. They look realistic, but at the same time, they don't. Real digitalized pictures aren't super clean, they're not necessarily all that smooth, they have tiny flaws and inconsistencies that are easily overlooked in 3d models. For example, the images you showed here; the pink in her clothing is one specific pink color, going from dark to bright, but it's all the exact same color. A classic MK sprite doesn't have that. There are multiple different pink colors, even in a tiny area. There might be some grey, brown or blue in there. You don't see that looking at the image, but when you zoom in, it becomes noticable. The brown color on that character's entire body is probably just one color. In MK sprites, one pixel might have a certain brown color, but the one right next to it will be more towards the red-end of the spectrum, and the one next to that one more towards the yellow. So when drawing these things by hand, I try to incorporate that, as it results in a more realistic image (in my opinion), exactly because it's so varied, and "not clean". 3D models have a tendency of kinda looking like toys in some cases. The picture of Ophidia, her torso and head, her posture, the coloration on her, all of that took a really long time, but I like the result; it kinda looks like a legit classic MK sprite. It's based off MK3 Sonya, but you won't find her like that in any of the official sprite sheets. I'd be impressed if someone figured out which exact sprite I used. There's a lot of detail in there, that isn't even noticable, because the image is so smal. It's impossible (for me at least) to repeat that process for the character's entire sprite sheet.

Or perhaps I should try out some other media, maybe I'm just an idiot for using Paint, lol, I don't know.

Didn't you get the memo? NetherRealm Studios doesn't want "creatures" in their game. That's why two certain Tarkatan's got wiped out by one new creature. Can't have too many creatures in a fighting game. They rather have more generic human characters with "magic" than not.

What I mean by "creature" (or monster character) is something like Motaro. Something that they'd use as a boss-character back in the day, but would've been too problematic to be playable in the game. Motaro was a playable character in MK:A, but they got rid of the horse body. I want a playable Centaur in the game, I think the technology would allow for that nowadays. They need to figure that out, how to make those types of characters work within the game. A centaur, a Naga character like Ophidia here, a big spider type of character, a Shokan who actually makes proper use of its four arms lol. Characters that are bigger than others, have different hitboxes, etc. The Alien in MKX comes very close to being a monster character, because it incorporates a long tail. I'd consider the Predator to be a normal character, as none of his physical features differ all that much from any other normal character's.

Yeah, no. Fuck those characters. They're just there for the money, even having Alien replacing Baraka. They're not legit Mortal Kombat characters and won't be seen in the next game.
