WOWOWOW, it's about time I did this picture!! I've been meaning to do something like this forever, but couldn't get the poses right.
BUT, I'm so glad I finally got to it!If ANY of you guys remember my pic, "Stay Stay Stay", then I guess you could call this a sequel pic, maybe? I used the same technique for the background, but changed the shading style and stuffies. Basically, IMPROOOVEMEEEEENTTTT wow.
I guess, if you follow the sequence of the pic, Topaz fell all the way down the hill cause she's a derp, and maybe Puzzle rolled down with her cause he's a cutie and they kind of ended up like this? IDK, I'm really sucky at backstories. Whatever, they're dorky together
Anyways, I sketched this out in my notebook the other day during my Healthy Decisions class (it's literally a joke; I've done more artwork in the class than classwork and still have 100% in there
), and I just had to do this cause yeah.I've done a lot of art today yay :3

I want to start this off by saying that I admire the amount of detail you have put in the characters' eyes, as well as the wonderful mixture of orange and gold used in this piece. Too often, I see autumn themed pictures and they only have the same shades of yellow or brown or red in the entire picture (using the same colors for foreground and background). Most people don't think to combine or change the hue, saturation, or shade of the colors without making it look like a rainbow of the same old reds and oranges. You however, have done a marvelous job using a medley of similar (but different by shade!) colors.
You also did a stunning job with Topaz's colors. You made a smart choice in making her off-white the in this picture, it makes her and Puzzle inside the frame versus being awkwardly placed on top of it. What also helped blend them in was the blurred foreground and background. Not only did it provide a nice depth of field, but it also helped draw the viewer's eyes to the main subjects. I also feel as if the colors you chose for shading assisted in this as well. When you really want your character to fit in a background, you need to shade using colors from the background for the best result.
However, I do see some minor flaws that I think I should point out. The only thing that I notice to be "unnatural" is the way the grass looks right next to Topaz. In my personal opinion, it looks a little too stiff. Perhaps giving it a nice little curve in it would help fix that. You could also consider using the detail brushes, there are some already in Photoshop, but if you wish for something a little different, I am sure you can search deviantArt and find various different grass brushes for Photoshop. I do have to say that your drawing looks completely brush free, which is something a lot of people like (meaning, it does not have that tacky look of using he same preloaded Photoshop brushes). A common mistake is using the same old leave brush in the trees, but your background trees look fantastic, so that's nothing to worry about in your case.
Although I do like you shading since it is soft and suits the mood well, I do want to suggest that you try cell shading. In my personal opinion, I feel as if soft shading should be used either sparingly, or mixed with cell shading. The more detailed the shading, the more detailed the picture. I can see on the path that you are on, that you will have more pieces in the future that will be more advanced in theme, lighting, background, and posing and they will all require a different combination of shading techniques. For some tutorials and how-to's you can search "cell shading" on deviantArt or the web. I usually read the different techniques, then try to combine them. Sometimes it taken more than just a layer or two to get some nice shading, but it's totally worth it.
Please, keep up your beautiful work. I really do think that this piece has demonstrated how much you have improved in just a year. You clearly have show your capabilities of using digital programs, and I do hope you will continue to do so.
