Description My 3rd attempt at practicing drawing faces, as it's not my usual thing. I was a bit too ambitious!

Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn from a really popular reference image – link below

For 'Middle Earth' competition.

Well I thought I'd have another go at portrait art to try and work on technique again as I have learned a lot since my 2nd attempt over a month ago! I took some measurements for the key bits to try and make sure it actually looks a bit like Viggo. I've tried to blend my shading a bit better and make sure my tone and contrast are improved from my last portrait. All my 'Work in Progress' pics are in my Scrapbook if anyone wants to see how I built up the drawing! [link]

Major thanks to the Tutorials, hints and tips from the DA community, especially Meks , Rick (make those blacks..BLACK) and Li .

A4 Bristol Paper, 2H – 8B, Eraser, Blending things, Time (lots!) and frustration!

As usual folks, I'm really trying to improve and I think I have over the last 9 weeks, since I started; however there is still so much to learn!

Please comment and criticise, as it's the best way I can improve!

So far for me...this is my masterpiece!!

Kal

Reference Comparison:

*Re-uploaded image, just spent 10 mins on a couple of minor changes to hair bottom left and right as it looked horrible. It's a present for my dad, so I had to tweak...now being sprayed *

I posted this ages ago? Lol thanks for the kind words! Well I'd drawn 2 portraits before this and just drew them in 4 or 5 hours in my normal way...this one I really thought about what I was doing and how I could improve and people were spending tons of time on things....

...so I got some really good paper, a great reference I printed out properly and tried using a grid on (which worked, and I do it with all my proper stuff at the moment) and spent about 25+ hours drawing this hehe...read a bunch of tutorials and got some feedback about this 'blending' milarky....

Anyway this is what turned up and I was thrilled hehe! Probably my biggest step up in improvement I noticed from my 2nd to 3rd portrait here! Then tried to improve the hair on my next 'Beautiful Graphite' piece as I fooked the hair up on this one, as it looks horrible

I'm totally impressed. I love your style on the hair. You've given excellent stand-out details on his eyebrows and facial hair. I can't even get the hair that detailed. Yes, Bristol Board takes much longer because of the texture and pressure you have to give to the graphite. It doesn't spread as easy either.

*Hint* For fun, a great looking product, and easy erasing & shading try using Vellum translucent paper by Canson. 9inches by 12inches or near A4 paper size. The pictures look exceptional when scanned. Here's the links to some of my pics using that paper: [link] and [link] Your drawing time can be cut in half.

Your drawing is magnificent. If there are any errors (which I don't see), to me they give personality and style, which your picture reflects beautifully!

Yeh filling in an entire sheet of A4 takes so much time! Just drawing a face in the middle is a lot quicker heh then there is the layers of graphite and paying attention to detail It all added up

Oy!
Yeah, I've been taking drawing a lot more serious as well and one drawing seems to take forever now.
But it is a wonderful drawing, it really is! And I have a feeling I might have forgotten to fav it. I'll check (I'm very forgetful )

Heh yeh, fav's can get a bit mad I try not to fav too many as it gets out of control Some things are just totally worth it though, and people with tons of good stuff I just watch heh, I can always find them again then

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

anmeher In reply to Kalgoras [2011-07-04 08:43:34 +0000 UTC]

true, that's kind of the reason I'm watching a ton of people. haha.
But sometimes I just like to look through my favorite drawings, paintings or whatever.

I recently put mine into folders, they were getting way out of control

That's good to hear! This was only my 3rd attempt at drawing faces, so I hadn't drawn much hair before...now I've done a few more, I'm a bit more comfortable with how it looks....still not 100% happy though, but I find it the hardest bit!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acjub In reply to Kalgoras [2011-06-30 11:15:08 +0000 UTC]

How on earth did you get so good so quickly? seriously your third try?
Makes my work seem pointless

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalgoras In reply to acjub [2011-06-30 11:21:54 +0000 UTC]

Lol, well only 3rd at drawing faces, I was drawing other things as well for a while and faces are still just...'things to copy' If you have a reference and you draw what you see, then I'm not sure it really matters what the thing actually 'is' if that makes sense?

Hair I find hard, because it's really hard working out exactly what you are seeing with the strands so fine and trying to give the impression of thousands of hairs without drawing every one of the little things! Probably why texture on clothes like wool is really hard too...I can't draw every fibre!

I've read a ton of tutorials and had some great help from people on here, so it's improved quite quickly, which I'm really pleased about! The improvements are slowing down now though, as with anything...the big jumps come at the beginning

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acjub In reply to Kalgoras [2011-06-30 12:42:03 +0000 UTC]

Makes sense yes
I've always hated to draw hair. I can never get it right it seems. I'm not very good at drawing clothes either.

I think this is excellent - really strong with the eyes and proportions. The only part that seems a 'bit' off is the heavy dark hairline on the right side of his brow. Could be a softer transition and shading.

Other than that, superb.
