Description
Some more exotic - a turkish dragon, (in)famous Kazilik. This time also I tried to make the dragon look a bit different than already-drawn ones to show it's different origins.
I hope it looks ok
EDIT('14): Now it has proper tail length

To be honest - that steam thing is the hardest to figure thing about the dragons in Temeraire (alongside with Sui-Riu ability to boil water).
The fire can be kind alike flame-thrower using some highly flammable gas as fuel, that is distilled in Kazilik's body from air/food and then breathed out under pressure (strong muscles and so) and catching fire when in contact with air.
But steam needs high temperature to appear - higher than a living creature can survive without harm. Only idea that comes to me is that it uses the same gas as fire-breathing and the water is boiled only when already in spikes to avoid burns. Also it may be not "pure" steam, but mix of partially boiled water (which would explain why it makes Kazilik wet instead of dispersing in air) and the said gas, and the water just prevents it from catching flame by lowering its energy.
That would do quite nice explanation I think - hungry Kazilik can give out less flame and dehydrated one is simply dangerous to everything, including itself, since the gas within him doesn't get enough cooling, which makes fever a lethal threat to them (so Iskierka, when wounded, was instinctively eating almost nothing to reduce the gas production).

That could work. It's something I've wondered about.

Kaziliks are favourites of many - not only for the appearance, but also for their literally fiery spirits.

Well, it's not all my ideas - only visual interpretation (and sometimes some details) are mine. All the breeds are from "Temeraire" book series.

Hah, maybe one day xD
Though I doubt I'll ever finish anything - I'm writing one story for several years now. And every time I get back to it, I read it and come to conclusion that it's terrible and write it all anew, so I'm not really moving forward...

Beautiful! I love the green patches on the trailing edges of the wings. The only problem I have is size reference; the Kazilik is supposed to a mid-range to small heavyweight, yet it seems more like a middleweight compared to a Celestial or Imperial, judging by the human silhouette.

It's smaller than Celestial/Imperial, but still bigger than Scarlet Flower or Parnassian and about the size of Defendeur-Brave - which are also counted as heavy. Remember that "size" is not only height to withers, but also length and overall mass. That's why Uturuncu will look small compared to other dragons, but it's only because it's leg model - it's length is only slightly smaller than Celestial.

I see how they would be, in terms of sheer weight, about the size of a Defendeur-Brave; I'm thinking partly in terms of crew size and how many people a dragon could carry...though I believe Iskierka had a smaller crew than most Heavyweights because of the famous Kazilik spikes, and the danger of gunpowder with a fire-breather.

Yup, when redrawing it a while ago I was wondering how her crew was doing "up there" with all the spikes around... That must be tricky...

but it is still a very beautiful pic. but the add another 1/2 to the body, another 2/3 to the tail, and then thicken her up, and there you go.

this breed is should have a long ropey body like a snakes, with lots of spikes all the way down. this dragon is TOO dragon-ish.

I always thought this too, that they are more like eastern dragons, with serpine bodies, but almost all the fan art on dA has them westernized, I thought I was reading the book description wrong lol

Yeah, recently I also started thinking about re-drawing it.
I have no time now for drawing ( ), but when I'm done with my projects I think I'll redo this one one day.

thanks. I like the way you had yours colored too. I don't have the software for that kind of thing so I'm more or less caught in The Twilight Zone for now. Nicely done. I also admire the wing-span: again as others have noted- many people have a hard time considering the physics to flight, so well done. ^<>^!

The soft I'm using is free - it's GIMP. So u can get it just right now if u want
I don't like the dragons with stick-like wing arms, so I'm trying to give mine proper built muscles

thanks for the tip. And yeah I totally agree, there are too many dragons out there with disproportionate wings and they just don't look like they could hold the weight.

It was supposed to be kinda beak-shaped so I guess it is, but I may be wrong...

Ummm... I never meant to copy the dragon from the cover (in fact I hoped to make something as much different as I can).
U see - I can't understand why people think that the idea from the book cover is the-one-and-only (when it's quite different from the description in the book very often) and therefore they copy it instead of imaging and creating something on their own. Maybe u can explain it to me...

That makes sense. I think it's cuz people think "I have a visual reference right here, so I'll just stick with that."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kalia24 In reply to Phaedrolous [2011-07-23 20:48:47 +0000 UTC]
Well, it has longer and more snake-like body than any other breed (not so distinct chest, the whole body is gracefully curved), but I didn't mean to make a winged serpent. I think this one is far less lizard-like than any pic I've seen so far and still looks like a dragon.
Kazilik was described to be slightly longer, as well as Celestial/Imperial, but more snake-like. So I did it - u can compare to other breeds (link in the 'artist's comment').
