Chapter 2: Unplugged
Matt blinked his eyes open slowly. Head throbbing with a terrible migraine, he closed his eyes shut tightly and waited for the pain to ebb away before opening them once more. His vision had slowly tried to come into focus but Matt could tell he was lying in bed as he stared up at the ceiling. What had happened? Was last night just some sort of strange dream? The only way to find any answers would be to get a hold of Jake.
Stretching his arms out trying to work the stiffness of sleep from his muscles away, Matt's arm pushed against something soft and warm. Recoiling in shock, he propped himself up on his side and stared at the long shape of a body next to him. It was a young woman with dark hair who was lying partially on her side and facing away from Matt. The comforter only covered her body from the waist down and she was wearing a small crop top shirt that was hanging loosely enough away from her skin that Matt could see her small, perky breasts. His first impulse had been to run his hand over her curvy mounds of flesh and see what it felt like to touch a girl’s body, but alarm bells were going off in his mind. He had never slept with a girl before, and he knew he would have remembered a girl like this.
In a sudden tidal wave, a million thoughts had run through Matt's head all at once, but the loudest was demanding to know what a beautiful girl was doing in his bed. Panic began to set in just as the girl began to groan in pain before rolling onto her back, hair falling from her face.
It was Shade, Jake's character!
This should not have been possible. This girl was real, not digital. The game was very realistic in many ways but not like this. Players could not fall asleep, characters could not expose breasts or genitalia completely, and a player most certainly could not receive tactile sensations from the game, such as touch or pain. As if those realizations had set off a new level of comprehension in his mind, Matt suddenly noticed he did not feel quite right. It was hard to explain, but he understood the reason well enough when he glanced down to take in his own body. His skin was bluish-gray and Matt carried his weight in completely different places than he had been used to because his body was not his own - it was Cals'tha's. His hips were wide, tapering into thick thighs below, but above they narrowed before his torso swelled out dramatically in a pair of large breasts. Light gray hair hung about his shoulders, spilling from his head. His exotic skin was covered only by a pair of boy short panties and a tight tube top that did little to restrain Cals'tha's swollen chest. No. It was no longer Cals'tha's form he examined, it was his body now. Running his fingers over the tube top, Matt felt his touch through those breasts. It should not be possible, but the reality of the situation was becoming obvious.
Matt was Cals'tha.
Turning back to Shade's prone form, Matt - no, Cals'tha gently shook her friend. She whispered loudly, "Shade? Shade!" Pausing, she was suddenly confused. Cals’tha knew she was saying Jake's name but her lips refused to say anything but Shade. They needed to find out what was going on. "Shade! Wake up!" She leaned over her pale friend and began lightly tapping Shade's cheeks with her open hands.
Startling awake, Shade tensed up, eyes wide as she interrogated Cals'tha in a panicked voice, "Where am I? What are you doing to me?" She began to struggle and Cals'tha grabbed her friend's shoulders tightly.
"It's okay! It's me, Cals'tha!" She could not even say her own name, either! Now Cals'tha was having a hard time holding the lithe woman down so she moved to straddle her, but Shade was doing a good job of wriggling free. "Shade! Stop! Just stop a sec!" Cals'tha pleaded, but Shade pulled free and tried to claw her way off of the bed. Cals'tha grasped the back of her friend's shirt and tried to pull her back when Shade suddenly disappeared in a puff of dark smoke, leaving Cals'tha holding onto nothing but the other woman's shirt. Practically falling off of the bed because she had still been tugging backwards, Cals'tha saw Shade standing across the small room staring at a tall mirror on the wall. The tall, athletically built woman was completely naked save for the tiny black panties she had on. She seemed completely in shock at what she saw in the mirror, and if Shade's skin could have been any paler, Cals'tha would have sworn she was seeing it now.
"What..." Shade quietly managed before growing silent once more. She tugged at her face, watching the reflection, and then Shade ran her hands down her neck to then press firmly against her small breasts. Framed by dark hair, the pale skinned woman's expression seemed to look more shocked, if that were possible. Almost tentatively, she then reached down to pull the black panty away from her skin before gasping and letting the elastic band slap back against her waist. Turning to regard Cals'tha, arms crossed over her chest, Shade asked, "What happened to me? Why am I like this? Where is Cals'tha?" The raven haired Shade suddenly looked perplexed as she repeated the name over and over again, voice rising in pitch, "Cals'tha. Cals'tha. Cals'tha! Why can't I say the right name?!" She looked close to tears.
Rising to stand, Cals'tha walked over to Shade, stopping just a step or two away. She addressed her unnerved friend calmly and in a sympathetic tone, "Shh... I'm right here. It's alright." Cals'tha reached up to lightly take Shade's shoulders in her hands. The thought crossed her mind that it was rather odd neither of them could say one another's real names. Shaking her white maned head, Cals'tha declared, "We'll figure this all out, I promise." Shade collapsed into her friend's arms and held on tightly, quietly fighting the urge to sob. The Drow was surprised by how warm Shade's body was. She had never felt a naked girl's skin pressed against her own before.
Cals'tha's thoughts were interrupted as she and Shade parted, startled by the sound of a cell phone beeping on the nearby dresser. It did not belong to either of the girls, but Shade answered it on speaker phone anyway. The voice on the other end was instantly recognizable, "Well good morning, you two. How are you both feeling?" It was The Witch.
"What did you do to us?" Shade demanded angrily.
There was a pause before The Witch replied in a playful tone, "I granted your wish, my dear Shade. You wanted to escape from your lives, as you have done every day in your precious game, and I have given it."
Blurting out in shock, Cals'tha asked, "You what?"
"Oh my. I thought you would be more grateful," The Witch said with a feigned tone of disappointment.
"Grateful? Where are we? Are we in the game?" the Drow asked, almost in a panic.
With a lilting laugh, The Witch answered, "Of course not! That would be silly! There are multiple universes, or dimensions rather, each one containing its own variant of Earth." She paused in explanation a moment, allowing her words to sink in. "You are now a part of a different Earth. Here you are no longer Jake and Matt. Here you are now Shade the shadow caster and Cals'tha the renegade Drow priestess. In this world, there exist multitudes of beings with extraordinary abilities, and not all of them are going to like you. Take care girls - Oh! And watch out for handsome strangers!" With that, the call suddenly ended.
Shade and Cals’tha stared at the now silent phone for a long few moments, uncertain what they should do. Finally, Cals’tha turned to Shade and said, “We can’t just stay in this hotel room forever. Let’s get dressed and find out what’s going on.” Shade nodded in acquiescence as she rifled through the drawers of the dresser. Cals’tha did much the same, finding some white leggings to match her tube top. Coincidentally enough, or likely not, they fit her body perfectly. Checking herself in the mirror, the Drow was pleased with how well the white clothing complimented her bluish-gray skin and nearly white hair. For some reason, she felt compelled to show off her body in the tight, revealing outfit. After admiring herself in the mirror, she tried to do something with her hair and tame the wild mane, but fell short with every attempt. Cals’tha gave up on her hair and found a cute pair of gray ankle boots in the base of the armoire located off of the end of the bed. It dawned on Cals’tha, while she waited on Shade, that neither of them had taken the time to look at their surroundings – not that they had been given a chance. The room, obviously in a fairly nice hotel, had the master suite they were occupying now and a living room area. Walking through the opened French doors into the living room, Cals’tha noticed there was a small, stripped couch and an easy chair facing a flat screen television on the wall opposite the bedroom. To her left, a small kitchenette with a breakfast table were set in the far corner and the door to the room from the outside corridor just beside that. A large window took up most of the space on the wall to her right, just like in the bedroom. Unlike the bedroom, however, the curtains were opened and the Drow walked over to look outside. They were in a part of a city, though nothing looked familiar. Cals’tha was able to read all of the signs and was somehow comforted to see a McBurgers and a Starbeans Coffee down the busy street. Oddly, she felt like this was home.
During the time Cals’tha had been looking around, Shade had been holed up in the bathroom with a bundle of clothes she had pulled from the drawers. Pulling on the ankle boots she had found, the Drow walked over to the bathroom door and knocked lightly. “Shade? Are you okay in there?”
The door unlatched and swung open slowly. Shade stood just inside the door wearing a pair of black jeans, a tooled leather belt, and a pair of black and red Vans shoes. She had nothing on to cover her torso, her chest bare. She was holding a white demi cut bra and looked upset. “I don’t know how to do this, Cals’tha! What am I supposed to do?” Shade was clearly on the verge of falling apart again.
Taking the troublesome article of clothing from her friend, Cals’tha spoke soothingly and offered a gentle smile, “It’s okay. It’s just a bra, not the end of the world.” Looking at the undergarment, she immediately noticed it was far too large for Shade’s petite bust line. She tossed it on the bed and rifled through the dresser until she found a small black bra, detailed with lace. Cals’tha returned to the bathroom and held the lacey undergarment up, facing herself. “Lift your arms and slip them under the straps.” Shade did as she was asked silently. “Now turn around and we’ll get you cinched up,” the Drow said softly. Shade once again obeyed, turning to face away from her friend. Cals’tha reached up and pulled the back strap together, and after some fumbling, got both hooks connected. “There. All done. You see? That wasn’t so bad,” she said encouragingly.
Shade pulled a black tank top on and tugged it down before turning to face Cals’tha. “It’s not the stupid bra,” she began sullenly, as she pulled a dark zip-up hoodie on. “It’s everything. What are we supposed to do? How am I supposed to live like this when I can’t even do something simple, like get dressed?”
Grasping her friend firmly by the shoulders, Cals’tha met Shades dark eyes and smiled warmly. “We are here, wherever here is, and all we can do now is take things one step at a time and figure it all out. Let’s go outside and look around." Shade offered a slight smile and nodded, clearly doing her best to remain upbeat for her friend. The two girls walked out of the room, Cals'tha having the presence of mind to grab the two room cards sitting on the entry table, and they made their way down three flights of stairs following the signs to the main lobby. Once in the glass walled main lobby, the girls saw that they were in a Hilton. A man and a woman, both mid to late twenties were behind the reception desk. The woman was taking a call, but the man offered a friendly wave to the pair as they walked passed and out the entryway doors. Cals'tha was worried that her Drow appearance might attract unwanted attention, however, the hotel receptionist did not seemed bothered by it in the least. Once outside of the hotel, Cals'tha and Shade were surrounded by bustling pedestrian traffic crowding the sidewalk and flowing in either direction.
Shade tugged the hoodie around her body tighter and zipped it up. Judging by the warm clothes most passers-by were wearing, it was clearly brisk outside, though it was a bright afternoon. Cals'tha, however, did not feel the cold at all. Looking up and down the street, Shade leaned toward the Drow and asked, "Can we get something to eat? I am really hungry."
It dawned on Cals'tha that she was feeling hungry as well. It also occurred to her that they had no money. "I would like to, but we need some money. I totally forgot to look for anything like that before we left the room," she said, feeling abashed.
"It's okay," Shade replied, simultaneously pulling out a credit card from her back jeans pocket. She smirked as she waved it before re-pocketing it. "I found this lying next to a couple of ID cards and some other stuff on the bathroom counter. Hopefully I'm not broke because it's in my name, and you know I suck at finances."
Cals'tha snorted a laugh. "Yes, you are. Let's go eat," she said, taking her friend by the hand and marching down the street in the direction of heavier pedestrian traffic and brightly lit signs. As they got closer, the girls could smell the food and Cals'tha felt her stomach rumble. She was definitely hungry. One place immediately appealed to the pair, so they hurriedly crossed the street coming to the Greenboard Bistro. Cals'tha felt a little less anxious, and hoped Shade did as well. They sat down, ate, and then felt ready to take on the world.
The world, however, was better prepared.

Huh, curious that Cals seems to be more composed in all this, considering Jake was the one who had the idea of going to the witch and getting some change in their lives, also a little surprised that Cals was able to work out a bra when Matt was the one with less familiarity with women, or at least so it seemed. Although it's entirely possible the changes are affecting Matt more on a mental level, considering the lower inhibitions concerning attire and such.

For brevity's sake (at the time) I didn't go into as much detail as I probably should have. What I was making an attempt to show here was post-transition/transformation Matt was of a particular mindset which allowed him to begin easily accepting the "new him" and thus slipped more naturally into the role. Matt wasn't happy with his life or with himself physically, often fantasizing what it would have been like to be a beautiful girl instead. I had originally included some of that insight in the story originally, however, I was trying to cut out extraneous details to keep the story from getting absurdly long. I think I may have reintroduced those thoughts later on in the story and left them, but I will have to look again as I proofread. Figuring out a bra was a minor effort in trial and error. There are two sizes of clothing in the hotel because it all belongs to the two girls. Putting one on is really very simple, especially when they are smaller, so after some minor fumbling, Matt managed to get it hooked together in the back for Shade.
Jake, on the other hand, had been perfectly happy being him, he just wasn't happy with his life's direction. Waking up to being a completely different person/gender along with being in a different world was initially a bit too stressful for him to cope with right away.
I appreciate your insight with those aspects of the story's details. There are some things I am not certain I conveyed well enough, so it's good to know what may not have come across as well as I may have liked.

Mm, I was aware that Matt was deeply dissatisfied with himself and had the escapism fantasy of playing a woman in the MMO setting, it just wasn't so clear to me that the desire transcended that setting to be something he'd be comfortable with in the waking world. Reading between the lines one could reasonably guess that, but it wasn't explicit.

By cutting out certain segments I may have left too much up to reader assumptions in that regard. However, a part of my reason for doing so was so that a reader could question whether or not Matt was finally fulfilling a secret desire, or if he was simply more comfortable with his new life while also allowing for the possibility of the reader to relate or identify with that scenario in their own way. It is a bit of a difficult line to walk and put into writing, so odds are I came up a bit short there. Of course it all depends on the reader, I would have to imagine.

Mm, that's certainly fair, having it be up to interpretation is an entirely valid narrative choice there.

This is what stories are about, especially with tf/tg! Time to take things in sorta, not a michael bay-style pacing plot.

No Michael Bay? Awww... I guess I will return all of these high yield explosives.
But seriously, glad you like it. I thought I would try to throw a little bit of a twist in there with a tf/tg subplot that wasn't just a "Poof! tf/tg'd!" Figured giving it all a little backstory with a unique situation would add substance before the story progressed forward.
