It's a fractal generator. You choose from several dozen different "transformations" — equations created by jWildfire's programmer thargor6 , plus a few others, that lets you create a picture.
By layering, combining, and changing the values of these transforms you can create surprisingly complex images. You can do this visually by moving and rotating triangles, or by plugging numbers into the equations directly.
It's less like doing math, and more like tuning an old TV. You play with the triangles in the same way as the old TV's antenna, and choosing transforms and plugging in numbers is like channel surfing. The center of the program is a low-quality editor preview of the fractal roughly equivalent to the TV's screen.
I have a Fractals and Abstract folder in my gallery, if you want to see "raw" fractals (this one has been enhanced, or "manipulated," in GIMP).
The native file for fractal programs like jWildfire is called a FLAME file (sort of like a PSD for Photoshop). It takes a few minutes to convert the preview image you have to an image format that other programs can use (a PNG image).
