I'm still figuring out how to visually communicate my designs.

doodling around alot is probably the best way to find yourself.Β
its great to just start without having any plan at all what you will be drawing or what you will end up with.Β
that way you dont put any walls into your way and you can just have fun with your designs

ah I see. yeah, thats something everyone has to find out on their own.
right now im working with a quite powerful pc, a wacom cintiq 24hd and I use sai and photoshop for drawing.
but i started with a laptop and a 100β¬ wacom bamboo. its great for learning coloring without having to spend money on lots of colors, but drawing lineart with it was very hard for me.
I still also have a sketchbook for pencilstuff, because a pencil still picks up so much more detail from your handmovement. but I make alot of faults that can't be fixed, so for the real stuff I go digital.
good luck finding your way
