Actually, the current building is the rebuilt church, after the previous one was gutted by a fire that destroyed it (and most of Viborg) in 1726. However, it was rebuilt in exactly the same style on exactly the same location within the following two years. The only real change to its appearance was made in 1876 when its tower, previously a spire design, was rebuilt as a traditionally Danish stepped brickwork tower.
The original church that was built around 1223, though, was part of a monastry which was dissolved in 1529, when the Reformation was implemented by the Danish state. The original monastry was subsequently destroyed in a fire in 1552 and demolished, but the monastry's church remained in use as a parish church.
