I really love the Yin/Yang symbol. I don't know what it is about it, but I think it's pretty much the coolest thing ever. So, the Yin/Yang symbol helped to inspire this (the dark side being the opposite of Melaney). I also wanted it to be sort of like a mirror, sort of like Melaney was questioning which side was really her and which one was "just a reflection" (to quote my own drawing).And of course, Melaney's favorite color is dark red, so the dark side had to be portrayed with the opposite color.
