Was interested to find out this about Smith:
The name "Smith" is explicitly attributed (as "IS 5416" on the license plate of Smith's car in The Matrix Reloaded) to Isaiah 54:16 in the Old Testament:
"Behold, I have created the Smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy."

Guess it feels odd because Smith is simply a destroyer (or, absorber..?) whereas Neo is more the creator.

Yea- def see Smith as more of a destroyer (although he does create a lot of copies of himself and creates a new identity breaking away from the other agents).
I thought it had something to do with Vulcan the god of fire, metal working and cooking (and sometimes the underworld and male fertility). Smith does appear quite firey in the coding when Neo 'sees' Smith in Bane in the real world.
