Now this is an interesting one.Before Naoto Oshima finally settled his hedgehog character, there were several character designs presented for the position of Sega's new mascot. Three of which were a rabbit, an all-American wolf, and a bulldog.
So... in keeping with the spirit of what all I've been drawing lately, I decided to try my hand at drawing this characters. I've actually used the wolf guy for a comic I drew once.
I really like the rabbit. He's very 1930's cartoonish. But honestly, Sonic kinda is anyway. So it makes sense. lol
But looking at these guys, I bet you're all happy that they went with the blue hedgehog, huh?

My Head Canon
Felix "Feels" the Rabbit - Taught to fight by Sonic when they were kids. Younger brother to Mach the Rabbit. Replaced Sonic as the lead singer for "The Pin Cushions" when he went solo as Mr. Needlemouse. Thanks to Sonic, Feels developed more self-confidence. Sonic and Feels first met when they were in school, and Sonic defended him from bullies making fun of his bowtie. Currently, Feels is touring Mobius with "The Pin Cushions"
Biggerson "Big Dog" Dog - Owner of popular restaurant, "Big Dog's Chili-Dogs" on Sonic's birthplace Holiday Island. Because of his talent, Chili-Dogs are forever the favorite food of Sonic. Big Dog's was the first place that the Pin Cushions performed. Impressed by their noticeable talent, Big Dog called his cousin. A very influential manager that helped take them to their fame. Big Dog is still working at the restaurant on Holiday Island, though is considering retiring.
Patriot the Wolf - The manager of the Pin Cushions, and Big Dog's cousin. Patriot also manages Sonic's recording artist career as Mr. Needlemouse. Thanks to his marketing skills, both factions gained a lot of success. Patriot takes his career seriously, despite his usual demeanor. He was floored when Sonic decided to go solo from Max, Mach, and Sharps. However, he was quickly relieved when Feels took the spot. When Vector decided to leave the Pin Cushions he already had Madonna Battlebucks (Sonic's ex) ready to take his spot as a precaution.

And these three are way before the speedy hedgehog made the final cut. But if it weren't for them, dude wouldn't be seen doin' what he does best, you dig?

The wolf character is recycled to be a one-time, yet, to be an Archie character hopefully, named: Focke Wolf (Tails Skypatrol) images.wikia.com/sonic/images/... I'm still quite shocked that Archie never made this into a story-arc yet! 
If they made the Tails Adventure story, then they should do this!

i aslo know that sonic's orginal name before the 1st game was going to be Mr Needlemouse (werid name I know)
I never saw any pics of what he might look like
so did you make how he looked from writen description or was there atual pics of those orginal appearences?

These are based on actual existing images that I have seen. Unfortunately, none of these designs saw the light of day.
Although the wolf guy in the middle, I did once use as an extra in a comic starring Tails.

i also found out if sonic was a rabbit his power would be to extend his ears (how lame is that)

Actually, he would like grab stuff with his ears, which they later used that ability in a prototype game called "Feel" which would later become the Genesis cult classic "Ristar."
So I'll have to disagree with how that might have been lame as "Ristar" was an awesome game.
