Description
Wow. This started out pretty serious and stuff, and I realised it wasn't really going anywhere interesting, so... I went nuts and had lots of fun with it instead. eueIt's more surrealistic than my typical painting, I'll give you that... And it's my first time painting these blasted sand dunes. XD But it was still fun to loosen up my brush strokes. My next goal is to go back and refine something I've previously done, or to figure out ways of further refining what I do! :3
This makes no sense.
anyway

This piece is frustrating.
It's frustrating, because it could have been an easy five-star, but it is not.
First things first, I am rather strict in my critiques, so my ratings still mean I really, really like this. I absolutely love the colours, especially the purple glow and the way it seems to merge into the sky. I love the prespective, the imaginative concept, the surreal atmosphere, the sense of the fantastical. It reminds me of Dune, and that comes from a -lover- of Dune.
The shadows are also well-placed, and they underline the intensity of the glow. The moss rocks are a nice touch, too. The best part, though, in my opinion, is the sky, with its twirly, wispy clouds, that give a beautiful, otherwordly feel to the painting.
So, what's not to like?
Well, the figure, first of all. The "head" seem completely disproportional, and the cloak forms in a completely uniform manner, instead of having a few natural folds. The glowy head is a nice touch, but it is barely noticeable, and also, if the purple glow is strong enough to cast a shadow behind those little rocks on the floor, shouldn't it also reflect on the cloak a bit? Shouldn't there be a few purple tones here and there?
Something else that could have used a tiny bit of improvement is the shading of the portruding rock/cliff, especially in the upper front (the mossy, lower part is great!), where the seems to be a grey/white smudge, which bothers the eye a little.
Anyway, the piece is overall beautiful. It could use more detail, more technical precision and more accurate shading, but it does betray a brilliant, imaginative mind, with outstanding ideas and vision.
Good job!!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="

Thank you so so much for the critique! c: The sky and the mossy rocks were quite a spur of the moment thing, and I'm also pleased with how it turned out. I was fairly worried about the placement of the shadows, and you made a really good point about the glow reflecting on the cloak. (The head wasn't as disproportionate in the sketch, but wow... whoops! I'll have to make sure I don't make too many careless edits again...)
I want to go back in soemtime to fix up all the things that are bothering me about the piece and I think you have it spot on. Once again thank you so much for taking the time to do this It means a lot! Technical precision and accurate shading is something I'm actively focusing on... I have the feeling I'll need a lot of practise before I get it right!

Haha, that doesn't surprise me... I still have no idea how I originally started painting hills and ended up with sand dunes. -u-
That reminds me I need to read/watch Dune ;_;

A hooded figure watches a giant purple empire across sand dunes under a violet sky.
THIS LEAVES A FAMILIAR TASTE /cilan/
But seriously. Brilliant work once again Kate. Really...your art never ceases to amaze me. Seeing work like this has probably made my day today.

Great scenery work there. Really gives off that feeling of barren wasteland of doom.
