There was one just yesterday that I'd gone to as well! I hope to have some photographs of that uploaded in a couple of days.

This is just. Amazing. I'm not familiar with the location of the shot, but how did you manage to get such a wide range in the shot?

Oh well, the red arrows were really high up as they prepared for this maneuver... It's surprising how much range a simple 55-250 IS lens can give you. Plus, the light was good.

Awesome, it is suprising how simple lenses can give you such amazing range sometimes, and yes, the lighting is pretty epic

Absolutely! THe lens is a simple 55-250 IS lens. All my photographs are with this, the kit lens and the 50mm prime.

This is one amazing photograph, you really did capture the moment with brilliant depth and color. The contrast really impacts you when you first look at it. You did an incredible job on this. Great work!

Well photographed!
Also gives me a chill, but for personal reasons. When the Challenger shuttle exploded, nobody knew at first whether the survival capsule had gotten free safely, so a lot of us hung on CNN in hopes of hearing more. Instead, they had a 20-minute story loop showing the explosion--the column going up, the breakup, the two booster rockets crab-clawing off in divergent spirals--and then intrusive newscaster ghouls shoving a mike in the faces of the astronauts' families and asking them HOW THEY FELT about seeing their loved ones die. Those same clips, over and over, for hours.
(I haven't been able to watch CNN, or most TV news, since. Only National Public Radio gives me the essentials without the ghoulish drooling over people's pain.)
But I hadn't realized the image of the shuttle's breakup had actually imprinted in my mind over those hours, until years later I saw a clip of the Blue Angels flight-display team, similar to the Red Arrows, doing a maneuver where they turned the smoke canisters on so you could see their trails, then flew directly toward a center point as if they were going to hit each other, and then spiraled up in a tight column and, at the top, opened out into curving petals of outgoing smoke arcs....
And I nearly threw up.
So.
This isn't the same maneuver, it isn't deadly, and it doesn't have pain ghouls making me feel sick about being human.
But it's a good enough picture to remind me.
Gorgeously photographed!

Oh... I understand. These pilots often bring people to the edge of their seats wondering 'what if something goes wrong'. As much as we try to say that they're professionals, we can never really rule out the possibility of something going wrong. We are after all, humans.
I admire the bravery of the Challenger mission crew and everyone who puts their lives on the line for public muse...
I'm sorry if the picture caused you any trouble or angst. It wasn't my intention...
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience though! It's amazing when people say a picture means a thousand words, and it actually does every now and then... for many people this could just be a picture...

The contrast and exposure on RAW... That's it. The red arrows did most of the manipulation.
