Erich Hartmann was the highest scoring fighter ace in history. Hermann Graf was the first fighter ace to reach 200 kills and was Hartmann's squadron commander. Both were held captive by the Soviets after the war.
Hartmann was offered command of the East German Air Force but refused and later commanded a squadron in the West German Air Force. After Graf was released a fellow Luftwaffe pilot wrote a book claiming Graf had collaborated with the Soviets.
So, what would the world have been like if Graf had been offered command of the East German Air Force, accepted, and encountered his former squadronmate in the skies over a divided Germany?
