It's from Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore, which is a hilarious and classic musical. Gilbert and Sullivan wrote a lot of great stuff, including one of my favorite songs of all time, I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYZM__… (I'm thinking I might have Perdita write a song about herself that's very similar to this one, since it's kind of fitting.)

When you really get into what the lyrics are and what they mean, the song becomes even more hilarious. It's exactly the kind of humor that Perdita would use, which is why I need to have her come up with a similar song about herself. I've concluded that Perdita is quite self-deprecating, though never to the point of self-loathing. Part of it is simply coping with some of the baggage in her life, since humor is an effective way of taking the edge off her pain. Part of it is to negate insults other people direct at her by not only refusing to become angry but show them how to "properly" insult her, thereby proving her superiority to them. And part of it is that her father took himself way to seriously, so being able to make fun of herself is a way to not only mock him but prove that she's better than him. Thus, I can see her writing a song about herself which, at first, seems like it's about her tooting her own horn, but then you start to realize that she's actually making fun of herself.
Another thing I've decided is that Perdita will frequently comment on just how plain weird her life can be. In fact, I think "My life is weird" will be one of her catchphrases, especially after something strange, like meeting one of the gods, happens... again.

I love self-deprecating people. It's really the easiest way to take the wind out of someone's sails that tries to mock you.

Yes, that's it exactly! They're expecting you to get angry, so doing the opposite and beating them at their own game is the best way to counter the insult. I think it's actually something that's very Orcish in my setting. Orcs love clever wordplay, so if you insult them in a clever way, they'll actually respect you more than if you just call them ugly or stupid. They're constantly jabbing each other verbally, but it's all in good fun, so insults aren't something that really bothers them. It's only if you malign their honor or integrity that they get upset. But Perdita is a polyglot, so wordplay is something she's really good at doing, so Orcs are often blown away with how she responds to insults and dishes them right back at her opponents. It's going to be a challenge writing her dialogue, but I think it will be totally worth it.
