Since I've been asked these questions a lot, I thought to write some journals about it. This is from an Adopter's point of view.

What are adoptables?
Adoptables are "designs" that you can purchase for your personal use or, in specific cases and only if the original artist permits it, for commercial use. They can be animals, humans, objects... Anything and everything can be turned into an adoptable.

What exactly *is* it that I'm adopting?
You're adopting the *design* itself, not the colours, not the art, just the character design.
Take this adoptable:

Art = The drawing itself = Right remains to the artist, unless stated otherwise
Original Species = The lines = Right remains to the artist, unless the species is for adoption too (Not valid in case of existing species such as wolves, cats, etc....)
Colouring = Black coat/Golden wings/Pattern on Tail = Right remains to the artist
Design = (Original Species + Colouring) = This is yours

You are basically adopting the right to use the character as a whole, species + design/pattern. Usually, artists are able to do a lot of different designs so it is unlikely that that *exact* design will be recycled with another species. Orange fur with black stripes on a dog can be used again on a horse, but they are still different *designs*.

Why should I adopt one?
There are lots of reasons to adopt a character. Because you want a fursona, because you want a pet for your OC, to join an ARPG, because you like the way they look... Anyone has a different motivation for wanting an adoptable, plus it supports starving artists so that's always a plus. Many artists also allow for re-sale or trading, so it's also a future investment.

Where do I find them?
You can either browse dA by searching for 'adoptables' or you can go to an adoptables groups. There are a lot of groups, so you might want to look at more than just one, to increase your chances to find the perfect character for you.

How do I adopt an adoptable?
Many adoptables have a 'first come, first serve' rule, meaning that the first one to offer the artist what they ask, becomes the owner but lately, the trend of doing auctions for adoptables has increased, so it's very likely that you'll find people replying to each other with their bids. If interested, just reply to the highest bidder with your own bid.

This being said, there are four main things you might be asked to give the artist of an adoptable to purchase their design:

Nothing
The adopt is free and you get them with little effort but be there at the right moment and place, because of that, they're the first to go. Your best bet in getting one of this kind is by religiously watching the artist who does them. Raffle adoptables fall in this category, even though the artist might ask for a comment, or a Journal adverstisement or something of the sort to make you enter. (Points/Money lotteries are not allowed on dA, as per dA ToS, so do not engage in one if you find it.)

Draw to Adopt
a) With reservation = You were the first to ask for the adoptable, so you only need to submit a drawing of the adoptable and you're done. This might come with a time limit, so be sure to be able to finish your entry within the time frame.
b) Without reservation = It's like a small contest, everyone submits their drawing and the artist chooses the one they like best. In this case, the time limit is mandatory.

Trade
You'll be asked to draw something (one of the artist's OCs or a design of your own) in exchange for the adoptable. A time limit might be involved.

Points/Cash
Not much to say here, points are dA's currency and cash is real money. There's usually a time limit to send the payment to the artist.

And always, always remember to read the artist comments and follow their rules. You might find that some are more lenient than others and will bend the rules a bit, others stick to what they have written and there's no way to change their mind. To avoid upsetting the artist and creating useless drama, please read the rules. Asking never hurts, but if they've clearly stated that what you want is *not* going to happen, please don't push.

ADOPTABLES BASIC TYPES AND GLOSSARY

PRE-SET
: Your everyday kind of adoptable, a complete design with no possibility of editing.
CUSTOM: A character you order from an adoptable artist. Usually colour design and accessories are fully customizable/editable but the base can be the same.
DTA: Draw-to-adopt, a way of adoption where you need to draw the character to try and get it, often works just like a normal art contest with one winner and one prize.
OTA: Offer-to-Adopt, a way of adoption where you offer what you want, not necessarily just money/points, but it's usually the artist that puts up a list of what they'll accept as payment.
NYP: Name Your Price, another form of OTA/Offer-to-Adopt. See description above.
RAFFLE: A way of adoption where you follow the rules ('fave the adoptable', 'comment and say this-or-that'...) and then the winner is chosen with a random number generator.
F2U
: Free-to-Use, used about bases, means that the base can be downloaded and used for free. Please read the description to check if making adoptables with it is allowed.
P2U: Pay-to-Use, used about bases, means that the base can be downloaded and used for a price set by the artist. You have to pay only once that fee and then are free to use the base as many times as you want. Please read the description to check if making adoptables with it is allowed.
MYO: Make-your-Own, means that you can create your own character of that species/breed. MYOs are usually obtained by paying for one or through contests, where you design the MYO and can keep the design if you are picked as a winner.
UFT: Up-for-Trade, when an artist is thinking of trading their character in exchange for another. Read the description to find out if the trade is open only for some specific species.
LF/LFO: Looking-For and Looking-for-Offers. The first is basically a call out to find some species/characters, the second one is asking for people interested in your characters (LFO is usually an OTA of the artist's own characters instead of simple adoptables).
CYOP: Choose-your-own-palette, they're very similar to customs, though the lineart is set and cannot be edited, and you can decide the colours and which colour goes where.
YCH: Your-character-here, basically a commission/custom with a pre-set pose. There is a mannequin, either alone or with another mannequin, in a pre-set pose, which is not editable, and you can ask for your character to be placed there.

The distinction to be made here is 'owner' and 'designer'. When a 'designer' creates a character, they are also the 'owner' of said character. When they decide to put the character up for adoption, they are still the 'designer' but they're giving up ownership, so now 'owner' and 'designer' are no longer the same person. This means that while you are the 'owner' of this design you bought, you are definitely not its 'designer'.

I am very sorry you feel like you made a mistake in getting an adopt, but I can assure you that all a designer wants is simply to be credited for the original idea, not because they think they still own (or want to own) the character. For some people, it's actually the designer that makes the adopt desirable, so crediting them it's almost like a point of pride. (Who wouldn't want to say they got an adopt from akreon?)

When I draw an adoptable, I usually don't mind crediting the original designer because it's both advertising and recognition of a design well done and since I liked the character well enough to buy it, I usually have no problem giving some love to the designer as well. (Also, if you draw them often enough, it's fine even if you forget to give credit sometimes. Unless it's a closed species, always credit those because people tend to steal ideas if they don't see credits. They steal even if they're there so...)

Of course, this is all my personal opinion and experience and if you still feel like this crediting system makes you uncomfortable, it's totally ok. If this is the case though, you might want to see if the artist allows re-sales and then seek out another buyer for the design you no longer want, this way you can avoid the problem altogether. XD

Sorry I have a question, If I adopt a character it basically becomes my oc?
Because I saw some adoptables artist that just gave their ocs as adoptables.
When I purchase one, it becomes mine?

One can choose to sell their own OC as adoptables if they want, but sure, once you buy the character, they're yours. Β

What kind of adoptable is it when you get to choose the gender and/or the palette or get a random one? Like this?Β C. Adoptable - Open

I'm don't know what kind of adopt it is and have no idea where to put it in groups...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to CheapAdopts-CB13 [2019-06-29 16:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Haha, if you let the adopter choose everything, it is basically a custom/commission.

Aaaaand, after looking at the Adoptable in question, I can confirm that you're offering a custom with variable option prices, so it would probably fit well into any of these categories: Custom, Commission, Other, Human. These to start.

An alternative is a 'Mystery' Adoptable, so you offer just a couple of options to the adopter and you decide everything else. For example, they decide sex and species but you pick palette and design. Generally a Mystery Adopt (Egg Adopts fall into this category) offers an item of sorts that gives the buyer an idea of what your choices look like. A seashell may mean that it's a sea-themed, blue and white adopt, a purple egg with stripes means that the adopt will have that pattern somewhere.

This may seem kinda wierd but I wanted to ask, once I bought the character am I allowed to give it a name, backstory etc.?
I bought myself one but the maker didn't want me to give it that name and that I couldn't give the design the minor changes I gave itΒ  yada yada. I gave the design back because it felt like they wanted it back as the conversation went on.Β

sorry if this seems wierd but I'm not that experienced with adoptables and really badly wanted to ask just to be sure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to SeroWebs [2019-05-27 17:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Of course you are allowed to name your character and give them a backstory, they're your characters after all.

The second point might be more debatable, the 'small design changes' you wanted to make. Some designers do not accept this, especially if the character is a Closed or Original Species, so you might be tied to the species' standard and won't be allowed even minor editing.

In any case, the main rule is, before you purchase something that you want to edit, ask if it's allowed so you won't have bad surprises later.

As for the name, I think no one should tell you what you can or can't name your character.

How do I avoid getting emotionally attached to my adoptable? This is a big problem for me and I can’t stop?

That was a big problem for me as well, and honestly there's no sure way to fix this problem.

I might suggest though that, instead of posting your designs right away, you keep them 'hidden' for a couple of weeks. Hidden even from you, put them in a folder and wait it out. Then look at those designs again. Do you still want them?

Or, if you're still convinced you want them, then tell yourself 'I can keep them if I can draw them at least two times this month'. And let's see if you really manage to do it. If you do, then you can keep the design. If not, you can sell it with no other thought.

Are you allowed to make adopts of species from copyrighted franchises? I've seen many, many, many adopts of Steven Universe gems, Pokemon, My Little Pony, etc. Is this allowed for any franchise you want as long as you credit?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Wintercat96 [2019-03-17 21:10:09 +0000 UTC]

I honestly try to avoid adoptables coming from copyrighted origin because of copyright issues. I have done some Naruto-inspired outfits but that's it.

The problem is that while you 'can' create an OC from a copyrighted franchise (not really, but it's seen as derivative work done out of love, so most franchises do not fight it), making an OC to sell it is profiting on a copyrighted franchise and you could potentially incur in legal problems.

If you want to read about something like this happening, Anne Rice was very vocal about her disliking fanfictions written over her works and her legal team also got involved here and there in these occasions. (Much to my despair, I would have loved to read some Interview with the Vampire fanfics)

It's very unlikely that a big franchise will come to you and tell you off for earning a couple of bucks on some fandom OCs, but these days everyone is easily upsettable and I'd like to avoid trouble if I can stay on the safe side of design.

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Wintercat96 [2019-03-17 21:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well, if you want to branch out from OS, you could try some mythological creatures, unicorns, dragons and so on, those are a good source of inspiration as well.

And remember that the lore and backstory do a lot for a characte/OS as well. Without the stories, characterization and background, MLP ponies are... Highly saturated in color horses with tattoos on their butts. Think about that.

Hi there, and it's a matter of asking permission to the person you sold the character to.

Fanart of a character is usually appreciated by everyone, but it's always better to ask the owner of the character if they're fine with you drawing said character because they may want to take the character into a specific direction (ex. a steampunk goth world) while you'd like to draw them in another context (maybe dresssed cutely, or with a personality not fitting the background that the new owner decided).
