Description I know this is not new, but this one is for the purpose of making bigger prints. This may just be temporary since I am experimenting with TIFF (rather than jpg) format as well. If anyone can give me some advice on scans, and which ones are best for DeviantArt prints, it would be muchly appreciated. Also, this is 600 dpi. Is it better to scan in 300 dpi for DA prints?

i struggle with abstract art, i cant just picture it and do it, but you've done it so well here, it great, the eyes of the cat ROCK, and the right ear looks really beautiful and the left leg even though the colour difference is quite evident, it just works so well, arrgh, i envy your skill!
its awesome, well done, i can see why people want prints of your work, its tempting me too.

Abstract art did not come naturally. I had to learn it. If you are interested how this style originated, see my file, "the story of Tiger Abstract". It shows the progression from realistic drawing to abstraction.
Thanks for caring and sharing...

This is a great piece.

As far as printing... a scan physically is a given number of pixels in size. Pixels = dots. So basically, for the given scan, the size you actually print it at determines the dpi of the print. Usually, print quality should be 300dpi, though dA allows you to sell your prints at sizes that result in print resolution down to 150dpi. Usually that's still really good looking as a print though. It's up to you how large you want to offer your prints, for the actual resolution of the given scan, within that limit dA places to enforce reasonable quality of the prints.

I believe (unless they've changed) that you have to upload a .jpg file for dA. I'm not sure what file format your scanner creates. For photographs, they are a tif file, and I will print from the tif file anywhere I have that option, because it's an uncompressed file, where a jpg is compressed. The tif is also a much larger file.

If I have to provide a jpg file, I will "Save for Web" at 100% quality, to get the best quality jpg file possible to print from. Certain files, like film scans in particular, I can really see the difference between the tif and the jpg, even at 100% quality - the grain of the film shows up much more pixelated in the jpg than the tif file.

That may or may not happen with scans of some art pieces, depending on the texture, as well, but again, unless there have been recent changes to this aspect, dA requires a jpg file for print upload, so you just have to use your software to generate the best jpg file possible as your print file.

Does that make sense? I am not an expert in printing, but I have had to come to understanding of certain facets with the limited print sales and publishing my images have been used for.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Up until just a few weeks ago, this wasn't even an issue for me. But recently someone wanted to use some of my images for printed book covers for diaries and journals. They needed quality images, and requested 300 dpi in TIF or PSD format. I have had a few print requests from members of deviantart, so also want to offer the best images possible. Thank you for caring and sharing.

No problem. That's awesome that you've had some requests for use of your work. I hope those are good opportunities outside of selling just the original paintings.

Thank you! Yes,I got fairly good money just for the digital images which will supposedly be used for diaries, journals, that kind of thing. I still keep the originals or have already sold them, and still keep copyright. Also I get my name on a beautiful product. Of course once I hand over the images I have no real control how they get used, since it is an overseas company using it. But I figured it is worth it, and the money was significant.

Well, I think they also took a risk with me. I could have just taken the money and not given them the images. I think the arrangement could be mutually beneficial. To have a beautiful product made from my artwork is quite an honour, and they have not asked for exclusive copyrights. I wanted my name and copyright on the books. I'm certainly not naive, but I have faith and believe that most people are honest and good. As far as legal action. It's often really not worth it. You have to have a lot of money behind you to win something like that and to afford the lawyers.

I agree, you're never sure if the client is going to stay within the set uses once they have the digital file. But as you mentioned, it's all about whether the amount you are being paid is worth that possibility. And I'm glad to hear, it is - "significant" income from your art is terrific!

Of course if you do see additional uses that weren't agreed upon, there's the possibility of legal action, albeit with difficulty due to the overseas location. But hopefully it wouldn't come to that.
