STORY AHEAD

In a cool autumn night, as wyngro are scuring back into their homes, a lone sheriff stomps along the cobblestone paths of the town. It's just past curfew, and the quadruped wyngro is doing his nightly patrol. A duty he takes very seriously. He normally takes care of this by himself, however, tonight he's accompanied by a tiny partner.

"Unbelievable," Sheriff Russell growled under his breath. "Seriously, so careless! I really shouldn't be so surprised that a crook would attempt to pull something like that off. I just can't believe she hid a newborn wynling for this long… AND ON MY WATCH!"

The grouchy quad had gone to his station an hour before starting his patrol. He only went to check on the prisoners when he discovered that one of them was hiding a newborn in their cell. He couldn't allow a wyngling to remain in those conditions. So, after taking the prisoner's child into custody, he made the decision to take it to The Nook after his patrol. The entire situation had left him quite...angry, to say the least.

"Stupid...that's what she is! Stupid and careless if she thought this would ever fly!" Russell grumbles to himself. He looks down to the wyngling cradled in the sling that's wrapped around his neck. "You better not end up stupid like her! I can't tolerate troublemakers like your mother."

The runty blue wyngling stares up at the Sheriff attentively. Her round yellow eyes widening, as if she is actually listening to him. Russell inspected her closely before leaving. She looked fine to him. Maybe only slightly malnourished, but it was nothing a couple of Alma's delicious meals couldn't fix. And apart from the wyngling's health, her tail is also quite unusual. Her white tail resembles a puny flower bud. No doubt she's from the most recent baby boom that possessed these bloom tails.

"And another thing-" the adult's sentence is interrupted by a group of teen wyngrew who are loitering about in an alleyway. Russell growls before getting the gro's attention. "HEY! You three! It's past curfew, go back home!" The trio exchanged looks with each other before one of them calls back to him. "Oh yeah? Make us, Sherriff!" The group laughs, completely disregarding the sheriff's warning.

That set Russell immediately off. The quad stomps over to the group, getting right in the face of the the one that talked back. "Some glands you got there, Brat! Wanna run that by me again?" The younger gro tenses his body up as Russell got close, his friends standing dead silent.

"U-uh… nothing, Sheriff."

"Yeah that's what I thought! Go home before I change my mind and lock you up till morning!"

The trio scurries and splits off, back to their houses. Russell puffs air out of his nostrils, watching each one of the teens go back inside. A tiny giggle snaps him back to the wyngling he was carrying. He almost forgot her for a second. If he actually had to put up a fight there, he'd be risking hurting the little booger.

"Okay, enough fun for you. I better take you to Alma. The streets are no place for a wyngling…" Just then, the child tugs on the sheriff's red scarf. A slight frown and furrow upon her brows is seen.

"Hey, I don't care if you pout at me. You're going to The Nook. The Nook raises good wyngrew not criminals. I'm not taking you back to the station… it's no place for a wyngling."

With that, Russell marches ahead to The Nook. He gives mean stares to wyngrew passing by, scaring them indoors (where they should be). After strolling for a while, the squirming and fussy baby settled down. The swaying of the sling as Russell walked rocked her slowly to sleep. The soothing cool air and the silence outside the town was, honestly, a bit calming for the Sheriff, too. But the silence got interrupted halfway to their destination.

The wyngling let out a loud cry. It startles Russell so much that is stops him right in his tracks. It's probably as loud as the cry she let out when Russell first found her. This could be bad. Sure, Russell was well within the safe grounds, where dangerous spites wouldn't reach them. However, he can never be too sure, not after what happened last year. They were in the dark and alone. Anything could be lured in by her cries.

"Shhh hey no no no. None of that. You were just fine earlier." Russell whispers as places a hand on the wyngling's belly.

"Sshhh it's okay. You're fine. You'll be fine, promise." He holds and presses her against his chest. Though, a bit awkwardly, he cradles her in hopes that it'll calm her down. As much as Russell is a fearless and tough skinned wyngro, he also can't help but feel like a protector. A protector to his colleagues, the innocent, his family…. all the wyngrew of his town. And right now, the puny blue wyngling he is now got to look after, as well. After a few seconds, she finally settles.

"Ooooowaaa…" The baby babbles at the end of her cries.

"There… Are you done? Got it all out?"

"Abooooowaaa!!!"

"Oh so now you're all sunshine and rainbows, huh? What was with that horrific crying just now?"

"AAAAWOOWAA!"

"Alright, clearly you're gonna be a troublemaker. Good thing I'm in charge. I'll make sure you don't get into trouble."

Not long after, Russell finally reaches the doors of The Nook. Alma quickly answers, concerned over the Sheriff's late night visit.

" Oh dear," Alma says " Don't tell me another wyngling got out. I'm really so so sorry Russell. I've stressed their curfews multiple times and-"

Russell holds his hand up to stop her words.

"It's alright, Alma. I'm not here with any sneaky children to escort...just…Delivering a "precious package", I guess." He then gestures to the wyngling he's been carrying in his sling.

"My goodness! Where did you find her?"

"She's the child of a crook back at the station. She was born there and..just now found out about her."

"The poor thing… Don't worry, Russell, I'll take her in. I'll make sure that she'll find a home."

"Thanks," He carefully holds the wyngling up for Alma to take. Surprisingly, seeing her reach out for him after he hands her over.

"Hey now, what did I say? The station is not a place for a wyngling. You stay here and that's final." He points to her with a claw, almost scolding her. Alma chuckles at the interaction between Russell and the baby. "Has she got a name?"

"... A name?"

"Was she not given a name?"

Russell looks down, thinking it over.

"Aki."

"Oh? Very well then. Welcome home, Aki. Say goodbye and thank you to the sheriff!" Alma holds Aki's little arm and waves it.

Russell begins to walk away, feeling oddly saddened that his temporary companion wouldn't be keeping him company on the way back. Before he could officially leave, he turns around to look back at Aki's round yellow eyes.

"I've got my eye on you, Troublemaker."
