Kid and Johnny were up late one night working on the fire magic. Johnny was upset that he failed his earth magic class and was struggling to get the hang of earth magic in general. It was upsetting for Kid to see his son fail yet another class but it was even more upsetting seeing him beat himself up over it. Kid thought that maybe getting him to practice his fire magic again would help him regain his confidence.
After being given some pointers, Johnny wanted to see his dad get in some intermediate magic practice. Kid agreed to it since it had been a long time since he tried to improve on his magic. The two were enjoying some quality time together.
It was then when Kid was manipulating a puff of smoke into a certain shape that the teasing began.

"Ooooo~ Interesting choice of a shape, Dad."
"So? What of it?"
"Nothing! Forget I mentioned it."
"It's only a shape. It means nothing."
"Suuuureeeee,,,"
"What's with this tone of yours, Johnny?"
"Don't worry about it. On a different note, how is Miss Jane doing?"
"She's doing fine."
"Fine. eh?"
"What are you getting at, Boy?"
"Welllll it's just, you were with her for a while the other day."
"I was helping her practice basic fire magic. But she hit a rough patch during it so I stayed to make sure she'd be alright."
"You stayed the night."
"I care about her safety!"
"You care, huh?"
"YES, I DO! I CARE ABOUT HER A WHOLE LOT, JOHNNY! I'VE KNOWN HER MY WHOLE LIFE AND LOVED HER THROUGH ALL OF IT!"

"And... you've never told her this?"
"... No."
"Why not?"
"It's...complicated, Sonny."
"Don't be a scaredy coatala. You should work on your emotions and just tell her how you feel."
"...How about you work on that sass of yours, Sonny."
"Oooof... Hit a nerve, Dad?"

"I overheard Pop-Pop and Aunty Sariel talk about it once a long time ago. Buuuuut... it is pretty obvious when I saw you with Miss Jane."
"Hm... I see."
"Sooooo... You thinking about ever telling her?"
"I have but... it's never the right time."
"Well, what about HeartKindle?"
