It was a clear afternoon when our little group hiked up the mountain. The sun shined behind the massive rock, so there was plenty of shade for us to stand under. Lova and May were very happy to go on this little field trip. It almost made me glad that I stepped out of the house. Sariel and I, though, we were struggling to put up with each other.

“Can you stop being pissed at me, already? I'm out with you guys, trying to have a good time, and you just want to be upset with me. What did I do to you, Sari?” I asked my sister.

“Hmph… Nothing. But you haven't exactly been helping dad. He's sick and you're stuck in your little world.”

“Dad is sick, not dying. And I am too helping! I'm talking you guys out so dad can have some peace and quiet. The least I can do.”

Sariel scoffed and crossed her arms. “Fine, whatever.”

I rolled my eyes at her and looked to my little girl, May, who was riding on my back. She babbled baby language nonsense to Lova as we walked She couldn't talk much, yet. The only word I've heard her say was ‘Daddy’ and it wasn't even directed at me but to my dad. As hilarious as that was, it felt like a needle to the heart. Lova happily hopped behind us, listening and making conversation with May. She came to our house earlier to play with May and me so I thought to bring her along. I swear, aside from dad, those two are the only reason I'm still sane.

Lova giggled and chirped as she skipped past Sari and me. May tapped the back of my head with her tiny paws, asking me to let her walk around. I wasn't too sure about it, considering we were up in a steep mountain path, but I didn't want her to miss out on the fun. I rose my right claw up towards her so that she could hop off my back safely. She immediately went over to the pink impling.

“You two be careful!” I called to them. “Ground here is slippery so don't go too far too fast!”

I watched Lova and May make a turn and run up the path. It’s like they didn't even hear me. I let out a sigh, hoping that they wouldn't trip and hurt themselves. Sariel and I followed closely behind them so that they wouldn't do so but they were surprisingly fast.

Just as we were about to make a turn on the path, something from the corner of my eye caught my attention. I stopped, causing Sariel to bump into me. She growled at me but I didn't really pay attention. My attention was towards a chunk of rock that was breaking off above us.

Don't fall... Don't. Fall…

I kept repeating that in my head with my eyes glued to the boulder. To my horror, not only did it fall, but also, it was heading straight for May and Lova.

“LOVA! MAY! WATCH OUT!”

I launched full speed towards the girls, ignoring the warning I gave earlier about running up here. But I had to. They were frozen in fear and would be crushed by the boulder if I didn't act fast. I leapt forward, shoving them out of the boulder’s way. Then I felt the huge rock slam against my shoulder, pushing me to edge of the mountain path. I immediately reached my claw out to hang onto the edge, but it was no use. My claws wouldn't dig into the dirt and, instead, slid and scratched against it. My grip slipped and I fell into the abyss.

I hit the floor painfully hard but it was nothing compared to what I felt afterwards. The boulder plummeted onto my arm and shoulder, slowly crushing my bones. The crunching and snapping sounds hauntingly echoed in my ears. A painful scream ripped out of my throat. My voice bouncing off of the walls. I couldn't push it off. I couldn't slide my arm out. The pain was too much that it was making my mind go numb and my vision blur and darken.

All I saw was my arm drenched in blood.

All I heard before I collapsed was May’s voice crying out to me.
