Description

So...today was very...stressful? Would that be the word?

Started off as a normal day, my sister Chrissy and I headed over to Colorado Mills Mall for some shopping and fun. Stayed for about an hour or so, and then we decided to head home before we hit all the crazy traffic.

Well, it didn't go as planned. Literally just a couple minutes down Colorado Mills Pkwy, right where the lanes separate into 3 and go onto the highway, someone had hit this poor guy and then LEFT him/her there to just to get hit over and over!

It must have just happened, since this guy was in the middle lane. Poor baby was trying to drag himself/herself using his/her wings to get away from the busy traffic (to the green belt in the middle) that was zooming around the poor bird. And at one point, me an Chrissy thought for sure someone was gonna hit it, but they swerved at the last minute. I put on my hazards and got right out (making sure there was no cars coming and no cars were gonna be stupid and hit my car with my sis inside) I went up and picked up the goose, and man, was it a wreck. Blood all over the road, and soon, blood all over my hand and jacket. (My hand was literally soaked in blood,Chrissy wiped some of it off with a paper towel I had in the car.) She opened the trunk and I put the goose in and then we went down the road, both of us just shaking because it was just so stressful and awful. Dad called Homestead Animal Hospital and they told us to take him to Golden View Veterinary Hospital. And here is where the picture of the poor goosey was taken. When I opened the trunk to get him/her out, it was hissing at me, and head held high, so that's a good sign! (As soon as the towel was put around him/her and I covered the eyes, they settled down) One of the vets took him/her away to get examined after I had calmed the bird down, and was actually trying to get away from the vet and was hissing yet again.

The vet told us that they were having an animal specialist come in to see the Goose, and they will call and give an update on his/her condition. He/she has a broken leg (Which was obvious, since blood was pouring from it like a faucet when I picked it up) and of course, road rash on the "elbows" of his/her wings. Blood was also in the poor birds mouth, but they are not sure if it has internal injuries just yet. I am just hoping for the best!!!

The goose really went wild in the back of my car though, it looked like I had killed someone. I, was a major fail at taking pictures of the back, so all but one came out really blurry. BUT, blood was slung all over the back of the seats, ceiling, trunk door, sides, steering wheel because I had it all over me and I was driving- EVERYWHERE. We were able to clean it out though thanks to our Dad~

Here is the aftermath of my car if you wish to see it- Untitled

A day after this, my sister called the vet and found out that he had unfortunately, had to be put down, due to his injuries being so severe. Rest in peace big guy~

It is very lucky you got to him in time. I have encounter some turtles that I knew there was no saving. I could easily tell they had internal damage and the vets in the area would most likely be unable to help at all. Truly breaks my heart when I tried to save an animal to find out I was too late or unable to help. Better stop myself before I cry.
Lucky the Canadian Goose was found by you. I am betting it will live.

Poor bird. D:
I hope they'll pull through.
That was a very kind hearted thing to do; sadly few would do what you did.
Sorry about the back of your car though, it looks more than just bleed back there. o.o;

Thank you~ I definitely try! XD There are definitely lots of people out there in the world that would do this, but they just get overwhelmed with all the negatives

KasaraWolf In reply to KaiZyaku [2016-10-12 17:37:17 +0000 UTC]

I think this would be my first time picking an animal out of the road that was actually bleeding, the others I have gotten out of the road have either just been knocked out, or had already died.

My parents have gotten many animals out of the road though that have been hit. I was there for some~

Hopefully the goose is okay.. And hey - maybe you might get yourself a goose pet now

And when we find out if it's a boy or a girl, then I can help ya name them.

Best wishes to the recovering bird.

I hope so too! And I don't know, they are kind of iffy here when it comes to having wild animals as pets, especially ones that are not "native" here Heck, you are not even supposed to kill them (without a hunting permit), or run them over, which maaaaaayyyy be a reason why the person hit and ran the poor bird. (But most likely, they were just ) But if he ends up making it and is not able to be released back into the wild, I will ask what they will do with him and offer to take him, since I have had a Canadian Goose and other wild animals in the past (with the permission of the doctors to keep in my home, of course, except for the cottontails I had XD) Not sure if my family would like it much though! But he/she could totally chill with my other birds~

wel - if you're just 'caring for the animal' it shouldn't be an issue for the whole pet thing :>

up yo you though. poor thing.. hope it gets better soon.

Oh no the poor goose ;D;

Well, from my experience of birds it is a good sign the goose did perk up like that and hiss as it means to hasn't lost too much blood. Birds have far less blood then us (obviously) so it is easy for them to go down to a dangerous level quickly. But if the goose was responsive and aware of its surroundings that was good!

But I hope it does survive, as you never know what might fully be wrong without a closer inspection.

Oh yeah, it is definitely a good sign! I think it was because I gave him some time in the back of the car to just breathe~

Yeah, and with some birds, especially wild, (at least, with the ones I've seen and rescued) they can pretend they are just fine D:

Yeah, he must of been exhausted if trying to escape the road while injured. I can't of imagined the pain he was in.

And it's worrying when birds do that, because they are trying to make it look like that so predators won't go after them but they end up hurting themselves more ;D;
