Description Hey guys, so these are the passes i've used. each and every pass is generated from particular matcaps found in Zbrush.
I really like this method because lets face it, there's a whole lot of matcaps available online with various effects.

my general approach when it comes to these passes and setting their blending options in photoshop is to set any and all ambient occlusion or cavity like passes to multiply, whereas specular passes and fresnel passes are set to screen and lighten.

hopefully the image will be sufficient for you to figure out what went down, hehe. but i will gladly take questions.

This is my first tutorial post because i find this rendering technique as the least technical and what it lacks in the awesomeness of other renderers it makes up with the amount of artistic freedom you can have while playing with the passes.

I'm looking at this for inspiration right now. Was this strictly zbrush?
Of were base meshes made in another program?

a little bit of both bud. However, you can do all of this in Zbrush as well and then retopo later on if you're gonna use the model for production. for example, here's something i'm workin on at the moment [link] [link]

Take your time with the model, make some nice custom alphas or download them. and use as many subtools as you like. no right or wrong way bout making it.

I've used alot of extractions, panel looping, the dam standard brushes, and a lot of polishing. hope this helps.

I should have been more specific though, were the armor pieces made in zbrush?
Or imported from another program?

hey Kassarts, this is awesome, thank you for opening up your workflow! could you explain your layers in photoshop? I went ahead and tried this method, but my render looks waaay off from the awesomeness you have here. Cheers

hehe, well for the specular passes you'll have to play around with the levels and color balance, and maybe try reducing the opacity of some of the passes Could you give me some more info bro on the settings you've used, I could try to help from there

I've kept the specular layers on top of the Ambient occ layers.

heh, cool you're using the same technique the guy did on the re-angel project at zbc? kinda fascinated how the zbrush shaders are used in that way, works with video and 2d fine.

think the amazon is really outstanding anyhow, nevermind the technicalities

I really should get Zbrush since it works well in Wine (Platinum Rating, which means it may run faster than native Windows).

Ah, it makes me drool. Guess I'll just keep doing sculpting without it, though. XD It just seems like it would be so fun to just lift and push features right into the model.

So when people say they used 3 render passes or whatever, it means the image was rendered that many times and then layered in photoshop ?
