Description This is another one that was very kind enough to draw one of my ideas again, despite it being rather different from her usual work. She did an excellent job to say the least, as you can see from all the small details of this piece worked into her typical art style. Given how often she is open for commissions, I would suggest checking out her account and gallery for more work.

One of the things I personally quite liked about the Star Wars Expanded Universe is how it went into such detail in so many areas. Even when the stories were poor, they at least featured an attention to detail which was fascinating, and seemed to properly consider just how a larger organisation might work or even adjust to circumstances. A big one of these was in terms of how the Jedi Order worked, adapting and evolving over time, and taking into account individual quirks despite its organised nature. One of the big ones was how it acknowledged the need for certain individuals to support certain roles, even with the assistance of individuals who were not sensitive to the Force. As the Jensaarai tend to carry a lot more heavy equipment and field a small fleet of fighters, having someone skilled in engineering seemed like a fun idea to experiment with.

So, over time, the question driving this character became - How would someone with two conflicting roles find a compromise between them in their lifestyle, and how would a fundamentalist adapt to restarting elsewhere in order to preserve the values she upholds the most? Even when it throws them even further into question?

ABRIDGED HISTORY

Born to a pair of smugglers scraping together a life on the Outer Rim, Rhan's earliest years were ones of constant change. Rarely having any place of familiarity save for their YT-2000, she was accustomed to constantly entering the ship and then exiting it only to see a new world awaiting her. This left her both exposed to far more of the wider galaxy than most children of her age, and also isolated at once. This may have contributed to the development of her Force powers, allowing her to "hear" machinery and seeing it as an entity just as alive as any living being. Yet as her powers developed, it became clear that without training they would become difficult to fully control.

A fortunate encounter with a Jensaarai Defender allowed them to fully understand the changes that Rhan was undergoing. The Defender made it clear that Rhan's potential meant that it could not simply be ignored, but offered both the child and her family a choice: He could teach her how to focus and control her powers through a basic means, but if they continued to grow his methods might not be successful, or he could take her back to his Order's homeworld of Susevfi to be fully trained as a member of the Jensaarai. The choice was left entirely to them, but Rhan eventually chose to follow the Defender, as she was unwilling to quash or forsake what she saw as a beneficial skill. This distanced her from her family, save for occasional visits, but allowed it allowed her to more easily harness the abilities she had barely tapped into.

As she had been trained later into her life than most students Rhan was hard-pressed to catch up with her fellow Apprentices, and resorted to more pragmatic means to close the distance. Lightsaber duels would often turn into brawls with both weapons discarded, and she would often use her powers to enhance machines to help with certain tasks. This at once both set her as an infuriating and promising individual, a quality which remained with her even after she reached the rank of Defender. Due to her aptitude with machinery, Rhan was more comfortable repairing, enhancing and tinkering with machinery than her fellows and constantly found work around their base of operations in performing basic repair work. While ever willing will support the Order in its duties, her arguments that the Jensaarai could not uphold the law without someone ensuring that they had the equipment to carry out their tasks typically silenced any complaints leveled against her.

Rhan was among the first to be offered a part in the Reclaimer experiment to seek out lost battlegrounds and recover salvage for the Jensaarai to use. Although she rarely saw eye to eye with its greatest proponent - Ka Tarvitz - her experience with traveling the galaxy and aptitude with machines made her a natural choice for such efforts. She proved to be an excellent salvage operator and her use of smuggling contacts was a constant boon, but like many Jensaarai she was affected strongly by the constant violence she encountered about the wrecks. It became clear to her that the galaxy desperately needed another group like the Jedi to focus upon maintaining order in the Outer Rim and, with so many others salvaging wrecks, she returned to Susevfi in order to prepare Apprentices for what might await them offworld.

Rhan would spend the next several years balancing her role between artificer, teacher, and justicar in equal measure, but found herself more frequently butting heads with those among the Jensaarai who believed that secrecy and isolation were needed in order to survive. Her efforts to expand lessons to off-world settings were constantly countered, and Rhan even found that certain details were discouraged being discussed in relation to broader galactic events. Eventually, she uncovered that the Jensaarai were hoping to avoid possible annihilation by the likes of the First Order by hiding themselves from the wider galaxy and even erasing past records to prevent others from wishing to explore distant planets. Rhan would attempt to counter this time and time again through her teachings, hoping to encourage an ideological shift over time, but her efforts were met with little success. Matters eventually came to a head when the Saarai-kaar herself warned Rhan against any such actions.

Proving to be far more loyal to the ideals of the Jensaarai than their leader, Rhan eventually agreed to join Tarvitz in his attempt to found a new splinter-faction of the Order. In her eyes, the Outer Rim needed more Defenders than it did one more sect of Force users attempting to hide away from the rest of the galaxy. This led her to a distant planet within the Dark Jedi Brotherhood's territory, and an abandoned fortress which could be rebuilt for their needs. Within several months, she had come to serve as leader in all but name.

He was something of an inspiration, albeit more in concept than design. I rather liked how his additional arms were intended to help bolster contemporary work.

That was one of the main references I gave Shellsweet when I commissioned this piece. In truth, a good part of this was inspired from the Dark Forces novels, particularly a bit when an X-Wing mechanic was described as working on a large armoured frame to enhance his work.

Sadly, this was vetoed by the Brotherhood's judges, but it's still a nice visual element.
