Hi ya! :]So since I have so little time to make any actual "finished artwork" at the moment, and the stuff I DO make I'm not allowed to show you yet (
) I thought I may as well throw up some of my brain-fart doodles to see if anyone's remotely interested in this kind of stuff.A couple of months back I decided that Ole Red:
... needed a companion of sorts to balance out his surely nature.. thus the idea of "Pinkie" was born and the working name has since stuck too. This deviation shows the pick of over 3 pages worth of idea sketches which eventually lead to a rough design I'm reasonably happy with. - I tend to put boxes around the parts I like, so you can see this sheet reads from initial ideas and crappy brain farts on the left, through to nearly-there designs on the right.
Going through this design process for Pinkie really helped me be in the right mind-frame for the Cheshire Cat competition entry:
..and as you can see, these two have a fair bit in common design-wise.
So there you go, some behind-the-scenes type sketch book stuff that nobody usually sees

wow.. I've never seen that in Red before... - I agree that maybe he was Pinkie when he was younger, but I never pegged Ole Red as having any sort of soft-spot till now.. cos now when I look back at the picture again I see it too.. that kind of glint in his eye that suggests at least a little of the bravado might be for show...

Aw he (or she) is adorable!
I especially like the lowest boxed pose they look so cute and happy :3, I love the chunky legs and teeny ears

heh.. y'know.. I hadn't given any consideration to the posibility of pinkie being a girl... he was always just a he, but now you mention it, I guess it could go either way! lol ..would have to re-design his face a little to make him less ugly though

maybe I'll deliberately keep it a bit androgynous to keep people guessing.. he's attitude is certainly very boy-ish, but it'd be kinda cute if he turned out to be a she and just a huge tomboy !

...maybe I should just keep a sketch book by my desk for writing the ideas down

I did it, roughed out some thumbnails before starting work and managed NOT to draw them out to finish!
I wish I had your confidence.. I get so crippled with fear most times I pick up pen/pencil I have to draw at least a page of thumbnails out before I can attempt ANYTHING worthwhile -_-

hehehe trouble with me is I get halfway through something and it just goes wrong. Nothing I do can put it right so that's a whole big piccie cocked up and I turn over to go again - plotting it out in little would be the wise decision but I'm just so impatient

gah.. but everything takes so long to do! .. I literally go through about three pages of crappy lil' doodles before anything workable comes out .. perhaps we both need to learn from each-other a little!

It's funny.. when I'm doing convention sketches I can normally get away with doing just one little doodle before I start... but then convention sketches are another beast entirely! >.<
I managed to draw that Owl-demon guy this evening btw.. he's not entirely how I pictured him (I don't think he was feathery all over, and his eyes were bigger in my mind) but damned near close enough.. [link] .. he'll probably keep me awake again now cos of doing that! LOL
...he needs a name too ...

Hehee.. Yeah, I love looking at stuff like this too ... funnily enough I'm always really nervous about posting it though! My characters are nearly awlays a bit of a work in progress anyway, take Dreamy, she's different every time I draw her!
