This is an old image but looking at it I'm thinking a little fire photo texture overlay, some smudge brush and liberal use of the color dodge function

They almost look like draconic Arctic Terns, if their wings were a bit longer.

are they feathers, scales or something in between? Either way, it's awesome and the fire looks wonderful

Great stuff, nice composition adn I love the colouring you have chosen for the wyverns, so easy to make them red/browns or other darker more menacing shades, but the white really works. Love the BG one, either the mate to the one in the foreground or a young trespasser being driven off.

Yeah, he's based off a bird, which often look chubby because of their big keels and pectorals.

ooh nice wyvern design there
not to sound like a science nerd here but i like how you gave it the full keel chest design and the appropriate proportions for the body to be able to fly

I love this picture

As far as I saw you get boomed with that intense popularity, I put that to a collection of awesomeness. And to be honest, your work is lots of new artist's paragon.

A little fire now and then is actually good for a forest. But yes, this is probably why wyverns are extinct.

Wooow this is awesome!!! I just love the shading on all the scales, amazing job!
Some critique, ohyah. *puts sunglasses on*
Well the dragon in the front, he looks too much like a...chicken. Idk. Well, I really like the unique feet but the body's anatomy just looks like a bird's. It's too compact. Maybe next time, try to make the body more serpent-like and the feet much more muscular (they have to bear a whole dragon's weight after all!) Also the tail looks a little too stiff, maybe add some more flowy movement to it.
Other than that, marvellous piece

Those are all more so design preferences. This wyvern was based on a bird for realism purposes. For example, a long flowy tail looks cool but creates drag in flight. Stiff-rudder like tails are better for maneuvering. The same can be said for a long serpentine body, inefficient for flight. Birds, bats, pterosaurs, they all have compact aerodynamic bodies. I suppose the feet could be a bit bigger though as it's a flying dragon it wouldn't weigh too much, (I'm not sure what you mean by making the foot muscular).
Anyway, thank you very much (:

Ohh yeah okay I see what you mean, it's just what caught my eye, because for "traditional" dragons it's important that they have really muscular legs (like crocodiles)

I like putting those on the flightless amphibious dragons, like wyrms. As for the flying ones, eagle feet are useful for plucking sheep off the hillside.

Yeah, exactly, I just said what I said because the feet looked too small in comparison to the body

Nice sketch ! Personally, I'd darken up the shadows on his wings a little bit, and if he's burning trees I'd add some trees maybe on a foreground layer or something. Other than that, it looks pretty good to me !

The design looks very close to my initial design of the wyvern used for my story. Which is make me wonders why wyverns are looks so spiky in appearance.

Dragons are always some level of spiky

Dystatic-Studio In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2011-12-22 09:39:50 +0000 UTC]
Trust me, there is an unlikely reason when drawing something spiky at the top, if you knew about Christian on the past, it would be a meaning of evil against the god when spiky object pointing up. Well, if I have to guess, the territorial flame is more like a reason for themselves than an aggression. Is that right?

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to Dystatic-Studio [2011-12-22 09:55:55 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I don't believe modern artists are considering this and including spikes in things for such specific religious symbolism though. I use spikes on dragons to emphasize certain aesthetics, such as the swoop of the creatures neck, to disrupt the silhouette, or for composition. Spikes are used in dragons nowadays because they're just as much of a staple for the creature as their scales and horns are. Regardless of the original intent of ancient artists.
As for the tree burning, yes. I imagine if dragons breathed fire they'd develop lots of uses for it. Such as marking territory boundaries with burned ground or flaming trees. Most likely standalone trees that are on their own or dried out. As a dragon probably wouldn't want to start a forest fire.
