This story took place recently.

Lucky had to go to the children's hospital for a minor surgery to help his knees work better. It was his first trip to the hospital since he was adopted. His brother Dean and sister Dotty stayed with their aunt Nutmeg so that his mom Dawn could take him. Once Lucky got his procedure done and was fully recovered from the anaesthetic, he really wanted to go to the hospital's playroom and have some fun before going home. Dawn was happy to let Lucky play in the playroom for a bit while she checked him out of the hospital, so she left him in the playroom, which was being supervised by the hospital's rec therapy staff.

Dill had to work on the day of Lucky's surgery, but he didn't mind because he works at the same hospital his son was at, so he was able to check on him once in a while between his nursing duties. While Dill was on his break, he saw Dawn as she was getting Lucky checked out, and she told him that Lucky was in the playroom, so Dill went to see him.

Dill found Lucky colouring at the table with his friend, a little girl named Libby who was there for her chemotherapy treatment. Libby's about the same age as Lucky, and since they're both fairly regular patients at the hospital, they see each other a lot.
Dill went up to them and knelt down to talk to them.
LUCKY: Daddy!
DILL: Hey! How are you feeling, buddy?
LUCKY: Good. My knees don't hurt anymore!
DILL: Glad to hear it.
LIBBY: Lucky, why did you call Nurse Dill 'Daddy'?
LUCKY: 'Cause he's my dad now! He 'dopted me.
DILL: Yep, I A-dopted you! Best decision ever!
LIBBY: Can you adopt me too?
DILL: Ha ha, I don't think so, Libby. Your mom and dad would miss you too much.
LIBBY: Yeah.
DILL: So, was Nurse Pawla nice to you today?
LUCKY: Yeah, she's great, but I just wish you could've been my nurse here like before.
DILL: Yeah, me too. But the hospital rules say I'm not allowed to treat family members. But I can still be your nurse at home.
LUCKY: Ok!

As Dill was getting up, he noticed something in the corner of the room.
DILL: Ooh! Is that the new puppet theatre I heard about?
LUCKY: Yeah! Miss Mulberry said it just came here yesterday! (Miss Mulberry is one of the supervisors of the playroom)
DILL: Cool! Let me see what it's got!

So Dill went behind the theatre to see what kind of puppets were there, and he saw a bunch of fairytale character puppets. He put on a Little Red Riding Hood puppet and held it up from behind the theatre and talked in a comedically high voice.
DILL: Hey, Lucky, Libby! It's me, Little Red Riding Hood!

Both kids turned towards the theatre and started laughing.
LUCKY: Ha ha, I see your ears, Dad!
DILL: "normal voice" Huh? Oh. "in the high voice as Red Riding Hood" Those are just very fuzzy trees!

The kids laughed.
DILL: I guess that's what you have to expect with rabbit puppeteers. But anyway, do you want to see a puppet show?
LUCKY: Yes, please!
LIBBY: Yeah!
DILL: Alright, here's the story of Little Red Riding Hood like you've never seen before!

The kids went and sat near the puppet theatre to watch. As Dill told the story, he gave each of the characters a different voice. Red Riding Hood had a high, squeaky voice, the wolf had a deep voice, and the grandma had a raspy voice.
DILL: Once upon a time there was a girl named Little Red Riding Hood. One day, her mother gave her a basket of treats to take to her sick grandmother. In the basket were sauerkraut flavoured ice cream, banana flavoured potato chips, and Grandma's favourite: pickle pie!

The kids both started to laugh, and some of the other kids in the room also gathered to watch the show.
DILL: So off she went into the forest on her motorcycle. "holds up a paper motorcycle that was behind the puppet theatre" Vroom vroom vroom! Then she suddenly met up with a big bad wolf. "as the wolf" Roar, I'm big and bad! "as Red Riding Hood" Oh no, it's a wolf! Don't eat me Mr. Wolf! "as the wolf" Eat you? Yuck! I only eat pickle pie. Do you have any? "as Red Riding Hood" Umm, yes, but it's not for you, it's for my grandma! "as the wolf" We'll see about that!

Dill made a high-pitched scream sound as he made the wolf chase Red Riding Hood, with her hitting the wolf with the basket, which made the kids laugh. Soon, Red Riding Hood escaped.
DILL: "as the wolf" Aww man, I really want that pie. I'll have to beat her to Grandma's house, then. Doo doo doo, ahh, here I am.
LUCKY: That's not Grandmas house, that's the straw house from the Three Little Pigs!
DILL: "as the wolf" Well, I'll just have to blow it down then. Whoosh! "as Grandma" Excuse me young man, do you mind? I'm trying to sleep and here you are blowing my house down. How rude. "as the wolf" Grr!

The wolf scared Grandma away and Dill put the grandma puppet's wig on the wolf and then Red Riding Hood appeared.
DILL: "as Red Riding Hood" I'm here, Grandma! I brought you some- Wait a minute! What big eyes you have! "as the wolf" All the better to see what's in your basket my dear. "as Red Riding Hood" What a big tail you have! "as the wolf" All the better to wag in excitement for what's in that basket my dear! "as Red Riding Hood" My, what big claws you have! "as the wolf" All the better to snatch that basket from you, my dear!

So Dill had the wolf puppet and the Red Riding Hood puppet chase each other again, much to the kids' amusement.
DILL: "as the wolf" Oh yeah, I changed my mind, I do eat children! Nom nom nom! "as Red Riding Hood" No don't eat me.

Dill took the Red Riding Hood puppet off and replaced it with the grandma puppet, who now had a sword prop from the King Arthur story attached to its arm.
DILL: "as Grandma" Nobody hurts my granddaughter. Come here, you mean wolf! I'm gonna give you the biggest granny beat down of your life!

So Dill had the granny puppet hit the wolf puppet with the sword until it fell off his paw and landed in front of the children. Dill then put the Red Riding Hood puppet back on.
DILL: "as Red Riding Hood" Grandma you saved me from the wolf! "as Grandma" Yes I did, dearie! "in his normal voice" And they all lived happily-
LUCKY: "with the wolf puppet" Grr!
DILL: "as both Red Riding Hood and Grandma" Eeek!

Dill went around to where the kids were.
DILL: As I was saying, they all lived-

Lucky then had the wolf puppet attack the two puppets Dill was holding, laughing and growling like a wolf.
DILL: Well, the wolf lived happily ever after, but the other two were eaten. The end!

The kids all laughed and clapped. They liked the puppet show and Dill had fun telling it.
Dawn then came into the room.
DAWN: Ready to go, Lucky?
LUCKY: Yes, Mommy!

Lucky started to get up with his crutches, and Dawn noticed Dill with the puppets.
DAWN: Looks like you're all having fun here!
DILL: Oh yeah! We were just making sure the kids' laugh boxes were still working, right, Red? "as Red Riding Hood" Yep! See you at home, Lucky!
LIBBY: Bye, Lucky!
LUCKY: See ya!

So Lucky went home with his mom, and Dill said goodbye to the other kids and got back to his job before going home to his family later. Dill's really good at all the medical parts of his job as a nurse, but his favourite part of his job is making his patients smile and laugh while he's taking care of them, especially when he gets to make a whole room full of patients smile!
