So I thought about how they found out Aang was the Avatar by presenting him with a set of toys when he was very young and he chose the one that belonged to his previous lives… Korra’s the only Avatar that the next one will have a connection to. I didn’t have any toys in mind so I used the betrothal necklace from my previous comic. Also, imagined Asami joining the White Lotus when she was much older (after Korra passes) to help look for the next Avatar… and the result is this. xD
Gave the kid Heterochromia due to mixed heritage because why not…

This is such a believable potential eventual future in the Avatar-verse.. And the small details you created! Raava as the essence of the Avatar spirit on Korras betrothal necklace, Asami still wearing her weddingring, the new Avatar showing signs of all 4 nations (darker skin for water-tribe, green eye for Earth kingdom, orange eye of the Fire nation and brown hair like most air nomads). And then of course this new Avatar smiling broadly like Korra always did and immediately choosing Korras betrothal necklace as artifect of the previous Avatar in the reincarnation cycle.. Just wow! :'3 This must be how Katara felt when she met Korra for the first time, sensing Aangs spirit in her..

The toys thing is actually based on the Dalai Lama. They do the exact same thing, they lay out a large set of toys, and if he picks certain ones, they know he's destined to be the next Dalai Lama. He always picks the same ones.

I can't imagine a more joyful, but also sorrowful moment for Asami to search for so long for the other half of her heart, only to find that he isn't anymore. People say that the Avatar is the most powerful person in the world, but he or she isn't, it is the person who loves the Avatar who is the most powerful person in the world, because they have to let go of the person they love the most. We have seen that those who were close to the Avatar in his or her previous life tend to serve as caretakers for the next incarnation in the cycle, but how bittersweet it must feel for those who are left to carry on.

There was a moment in the original avatar when Aang was found to be the next avatar because he chose an item that belong to one of the previous avatars. (Let's say the previous Avatar owned a small wooden box, and Aang chose that out of all the other items. It would show that he was the "New" Avatar.) The little boy here (An original character i'm guessing) is the "New" avatar after Korra's passing. The old Lady is Asami, Korra's wife.
No Korra didn't/hasn't died in the series, this is the distant future here where Asami is an old woman and Korra has already died.
in short, you didn't miss anything really. it's just an idea the author had that was really touching.
