No, that's not food in his/her mouth. That's the poor squirrels teeth! I felt so helpless, it'll soon before die because i'm sure that will get infected :[

Edit: I took this photograph the day after Boxing Day at a reservation area/country park, where it has wardens, reception area e.t.c - But no one was working that day, so I waited until today (Monday) to go back to see if I could help it. Me and my boyfriend waited ages for the warden to bother coming over to us and when he did, he said he'd already seen it ... this is pretty much how the conversation went...

Me & My boyfriend: Oh hello we were told to come to you about this - there's a squirrel in the first Hide that's teeth are too long and is touching his face...
Warden: Yes, I've seen it....
Me & My Boyfriend: Oh, ....
Warden: Well, it's a rodent isn't it...
Me & My Boyfriend: Hmm, we've heard a few people say that you can just clip the teeth, or take it to the RSPCA and they will do it for you and realease it back out into the wild
Warden: I don't know where you heard that from or got that information, that's illegal, it's a rodent they aren't allowed to release it back into the wild, they have to put it down.

So yeah... that's it WTF, okay we looked up the Law that says that, and he is right but STILL - IT'S STILL A FUCKING ANIMAL - WHY SHOULD IT MATTER IT'S A RODENT, it's in pain and we have the power to help How can people be so cruel and not care. His attitude absolutely fucking stunk. Bastard. I'm so pissed off, my boyfriend is planning to build a trap so maybe we can do it ourselves? We might get into a lot of trouble though :[ Sigh.

What country to do live in? Because I volunteered at a wildlife rescue center once, and there are squirrels there and they do re-release them into the wild.

Even if it's a rodent, if it's a native they are obliged to look after it.
Sadly, it'll probably starve to death before infection gets it.

Thats just terrible, someone like that shouldn't be allowed to work in a reservation area.. idiot.
As for the picture, i think its really effective.. i know its cruel and that it would have been in pain but you're lucky to have gotten a photograph like this.
Animals are not always 'aww' 'cute!' and whatever.
A lot suffer and a lot of people don't seem to care about it.
You have compassion! I like that.
You reminded me of myself when i rescued a cat from my evil neighbor!
He now lives with my mum. ^^
Anyway! Awesome photograph.

Listen, I'm putting this as nicely as I can. The best thing to do would be to kill it and put it out of it's misery. What help would be cutting it's teeth? It would still have infections, you see where the skin is ruined? It would be hell on earth for that squirrel to go back into the wild. It would hurt to eat! Do you see my point?

And animals don't have the same thought process as humans. They aren't humans, period. Instincts and survival. Really, the warden knows what he's talking about. It's how he feeds his family, remember?

BUT the picture itself beautiful. I'm sure probably heard this a million times but you are a great photographer! Just don't take all this kind of stuff to heart cause it might drive you crazy.

The Holocaust was much worse than a little mutated squirrel
It would still have infections, you see where the skin is ruined? It would be hell on earth for that squirrel to go back into the wild.
Actually not. All it would take is a drop of disinfectant where the skin is cut.it's a superficial wound.

I am shocked that you should bring up the holocaust here as an exemple of "something much worse".Of course it was but I dont like the idea of "using" it like this.
(Moreover if there was one single thing I could do to stop the holocaust/change the way things went, stop one person from being killed I would. But I can't possibly do that because it's already happened an we cant do much but remember and care.)

The difference w/ the present is that things can still be changed. With a squirel, with a bird..just because they don't belong to our race doesnt mean their suffering should be ignored.

Just my 2cents

h3adrush [2009-02-03 22:40:07 +0000 UTC]

This is so heartbreaking. Those teeth are going to grow (slowly and agonizingly) into the poor animal's head and make it suffer before it dies.

I hate the fact that there's discrimination even with animals. if that were a bunny i think he'd have helped. even if bunnies are rodents.

KatiBear In reply to h3adrush [2009-02-08 12:32:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know, it's very sad
Also I know for a fact if it were a red squirrel they would have helped, as they are an endangered species here!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

h3adrush In reply to KatiBear [2009-02-08 16:39:04 +0000 UTC]

That's how a species becomes endangered in the first place. People don't begin to notice until the entire species in dying off.

You and your boyfriend are truly the kind of people that create goodness in this world. This squirrel's story seems a crime yet at the same time, your part in this situation is heartfelt and inspirational to me.
I'm no one special but I'd still like to say a big thank you for not just feeling pity but for taking action.
Good luck in times to come.

Wow, I am curious as to if someone had this as a "pet" because their teeth have to have time to grow like that. If e had been in the wild the while time i can see it getting that bad because he would have been eating and gnawing on stuff which would have kept them trimmed down.

Poor thing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KatiBear In reply to sarahb86 [2009-01-29 19:50:52 +0000 UTC]

I have a feeling that it was ill at one point, or had gotten itself injured where he/she was unable to eat or move... hence the growth.

That's the only thing I can think of anyway.

Yeah
