Description
At Further Confusion 2010 I hosted a panel on coloring with markers, which went well! I handed out some info on markers, and promised I'd upload it here for people to access online. This is a list of tips and tricks to pay attention to when working with markers. These are the materials I use, so i can't speak to other materials and brands. But hopefully this will be helpful!

Dark to light? How does that work? I think I might be misunderstanding. But I thought you couldn't put a lighter colour on a darker colour and have it work.

Nope, dark to light! Try it, it works.

But I'm scared!!
Haha, I'll play with it tomorrow and see what happens, but I would have sworn it worked like watercolours or something where you can't do that.

Everyone has different techniques! Some people swear you can't layer dark to light, but I have found you can achieve rich colors and smooth blending laying dark to light.

Does it help if you wait for the dark to dry first or anything like that? Any tricks to it?

It depends on what you're trying to do. If you want a seamless gradient, move quickly and keep the edges wet. If you want the underneath strokes to show up more crisply, let it dry before coloring on top.

Thanks for answering all my questions! I'm not very familiar with markers since I don't have my own set. It's nice to get tips from someone who's so good with them!

I never knew fixative sprays on markers/pencils helped the colors.
Thank you for the tips!

How do you plan your drawing if you use markers first and then pencils? What if you make a mistake?

It goes: Sketch (with a regular mechanical pencil) - Inks (transferred from sketchbook on to bristol with lightbox) - Marker - colored pencil.
Make sense?

Because that would be REALLY difficult.

I was totally imagining you drawing straight on the bristol board with the copics, and then doing the outline sketch later. And I was like WHAAAAAT?!?

Do you have a video of the event or anything? Just wondering. I learn better when watching than reading.
But either way this little sheet of facts is very useful to have. I hate working with color, but have to get used to it at some point! Thanks for the tips

Alas, I do not... It was a pretty small event, with maybe 15 people at most watching me draw. No one had a camera available, but I'm glad you find this helpful at least!

Yep! I have found it intensifies the colors ever so slightly and preserves the pigment better than leaving it alone. Marker still is a very impermanent medium compared to oil paints or acrylic paints though.
