Description Remember my animatic from November?

0:54

WE FINISHED IT AND HANDED IT IN YEEEEEEEEAH.

Obviously some things have changed from the animatic and we had to make time-compromises and other-rageragerage-compromises, but we tried hardest to keep the mood intact.

THIS BITCH PUT US THROUGH HELL. The ambient occlusion pass kept arseing around, the boy's eyebrows fluffed up every few frames, his eyes opened and became PITCH BLACK, his hair reset itself, and more. And that was only during the rendering. Before that we had the boys EYES reflected in the car and staring at us, a brick wall and a face floating past on the car (before we dumped the weird daytime HDRI and used a darker and more appropriately coloured one), and glorious lighting episodes of variously looking like he was being shot at or staring at the Hiroshima incident out of the window. xDDDD

BUT YES. We are happy and bushy-tailed, if not bright-eyed. We rendered in the wrong aspect ratio, which was annoying, but we might redo it in the right one, and Spence is thinking of sending an HD one to the renderfarm when that exists. >3>

IT'S COOL, WE'RE PROUD. 8D

Director: Meera
Underlings: Me, Flav, Fayeez, Spence and Wojciech.
Special thanks to Rachael, our ballerina.

Made in:
Maya primarily, for modelling, animation, lighting etc. Plus RealFlow for the water, Photoshop for the textures, ZBrush for details, Face Robot for the rigging, headus UVLayout for the UVs, something for the music and wheelie chairs for render wrangling. :3

Excellent work. Thanks for sharing it. I can relate to the difficulties with things changing in unwanted ways. Just started using Poser.

Ahhhh, good old Poser. You know, as much as I like to rage at maya for suddenly snapping in two, I think if I had to do a project in Poser I would actually hurt something. xDDDD Hang in there! :3

And thank you!

I was Art Director, and I diiid...concept art, animatic, orthographics, textures (diffuse/spec/bump/normal), collab'd lighting with Meera, and gruntwork on the rendering.

Thanks!

loved this submission Kat, I think your whole group did a great job, not just smug bastard with no teamskills... not that I'm implying anyone in particular of course

Thanks Graham No, we'd never imply any precious little tits with no concept of group working. Neverrr.

how long did it take to render this thing?

Maya primarily, for modelling, animation, lighting etc. Plus RealFlow for the water, Photoshop for the textures, ZBrush for details, Face Robot for the rigging, headus UVLayout for the UVs, something for the music, and Opera and Firefox for procrastination. xD

We rendered using renderman (because we were going to use the renderfarm but then it wasn't ready anyway). It took in the region of 15 mins per frame (we would have used SSS but it would have put it up to about 30mins) and there are 1,628 frames, but we used about 25-30 computers doing 20 frames at a time for the first and second shots so it wasn't just 15x1628mins. It was longer than just 15x20x2 though, because LOTS went wrong and we had to re-render hundreds of frames, plus additional passes and the backplate. We mostly rendered and re-rendered overnight over about 4 nights. OH and the middle sequence was rendered at home by one of our guys who got way too precious with it because he did most of the final work on it (against our inclinations), so that probably took him f'ng ages. >.>

The renderfarm's ready now (ffffffffs), so we're planning to do an HD render when we get the chance, with SSS and everything. :3

OH MY GOD SORRY I WROTE AN ESSAY. xD Did that answer your questions?

yep!
that answered my question.
Good god, that would have driven me insane.
I may have just slammed my computer against a wall.
