Description So, having watched Howl’s Moving Castle a few weeks ago, then read the book, I came to the conclusion that we kinda need a mix of the two somehow. I mean, the film was good ‘n’ all, but I’d have preferred it more faithful to the book, and Howl was just camp. Howl in the book is absolutely brilliant, and the ending’s more adorable than sickening. But I think Howl’s little turning-into-a-blue-bird-monster thing was just too cool to let go, and the cumulative…what…10 seconds of film we get dedicated to the full bird form (apart from at the end, where it just look fat) has spawned a bit of an out-spewage of doodles from me.
This lot…the top one is the first doodle I did of the bird form. The second one I did after Howl - Bird Form 1 when I realised that in fact my version of the bird form was not exactly accurate… And the bottom one is the first one I actually vaguely referenced. The rest were done at school, so sue me. Yes, Howl’s neck is too thick.
Biro!
Howell Jenkins is © Diana Wynne Jones
Howl’s weird blue bird form is © Hayao Miyazaki, I suppose.
Can I take credit for the “edited” bird form?

Oh, agreed x3 I re-read it the other month because we had it in the library and I could, and just cutespazzed all over again at the last bit with Calcifer talking about how his heart's really very soft!

I know, it seems to be oddly rare, considering how F'NG AMAZING her books are. Mind you, if my friend saw me talking like this she'd scoff, because she keeps telling me to read Absolutely Everything by her and I keep not having time. xD But dayum, I like everything of hers I have read.

Personally I just haven't had time what with uni and stuff. O.o It's really annoying because I used to read so much, and I miss it. ;____;

Howl's Moving castle is definitely one of my favourites, and I did like Castle in the Air (though less so), and there's another sequel which I haven't read yet called House of Many Ways. I would recommend Deep Secret LIKE WHOA because augh, the concept is amazing and the characters are wonderful and I adored it and I must read it again. xD And I think that may have a sequel. I've also read Dark Lord of Derkholm which is absolutely hilarious. xDDD Also, read the Chrestomanci books. I've read Witch Week, which is genius and so endearing, and I'm reading Charmed Life at the moment. Also, Dogsbody was fantastic. :3 Really, I need to read more of hers. xDDD

And yes! I've seen it and it looks adorable. x3 And I liked their version of Howl's Moving Castle but as a separate entity from the book really, because the characters were quite different. It slightly annoys me when people think that Ghibli came up with it because I prefer the book so much and nobody's ever heard of it. ;____;

Theres another sequel O.o, I must read this.
Thankyou for the recommendations, I know what it's like to be busy, i've just applied for a few uni's and it's so stressful gah >.<
Which uni you are you at if you don't mind me asking? I've applied for Demontfort in leicester, Staffordshire and coventry to do the graphics and illustration courses but yet to recieve interview dates
It annoys me too cause the book carrys so much more plot then the film, and the way the book is described it puts you in the moment and you feel like your actually there and i've never read such a descriptive detailed book. But I love the anime too, they made Howl so beautiful and I adore calcifer.
Do you know why in the anime sophie goes from young to old, it confuses me a little.

Bournemouth uni, 2nd year Computer Visualisation and Animation. :3 We have an insane timetable. xD

Yah, I did like the anime, but Howl was waay too 2-dimensional. He wasn't properly flawed like the book one at all. :c I like to think of the movie as something inspired by the book, rather than being an adaption of it because it doesn't do the various aspects of the book justice, but I do like it very much as a separate entity.

Urrrh, it's been a while since I watched it, but I thought it was the witch's curse like in the book?
