If the mountains were higher and snow covered, you could swear this is the Altiplano. Excellent pamoramic view done in a single frame, my friend. I miss the high desert of SoCal...

Many thanks for your kind compliment. Agreed, there are similarities north and south of the equator. Someday I hope to see the Altiplano, the Atacama, the ESO, and the southern tip of Chile/Argentina.

You want to see the Faulkland Islands and Cape Horn, eh? Very cold down there.
The Altiplano is a world all its own. It is one of the most rugged places on Earth. The mountains are HUGE. They are also volcanic. Those mountains are still young and continue to form as the American plates slip under the Pacific plate. But what makes the Altiplano so awesome is the people who live there. The Native Andean folks are in those hills. Visiting them gives a whole new meaning to what it is to be genuinely happy in the absence of westernized consumerism. They have and want nothing more than to live off the land, no easy task considering the terrain and climate...
The Altiplano begins in Ecuador and extends all the way down the eastern border of Chile. It widens out to cover the western third of Bolivia. It is there that the mountains are at their highest. Llamas are everywhere. Near Lake Poopo at Oruro, a large flock of Pink Flamingos makes a home. Beyond Lake Poopo is the Great Salt Flat, so big it can easily be seen from space. On the other side are more mountains and near the border of Bolivia and Peru is Lake Titicaca, the highest body of water on Earth where boats can sail.
As a general rule, folks there welcome others from other lands. They are a proud people who have little in the way of the creature comforts we are so used to here in the states. It is a very humbling experience just to read about the place and her people, let alone, to go there. One of the main attractions for me is the music. Nowhere on this planet will you find such beautiful music made on unique instruments as you shall find in the Altiplano. And nowhere else will you find living history so ancient.

Agreed sometimes the Owens Valley smells like Mixture 79 pipe tobacco after a rain; like incense.

True enough about winter. Funny weather all around. Good shot, and kinda cold.
I don't think my pics have ever changed color on me. Huh.

Thanks, James. Here it is, past mid-May, nights are still freezing in the valleys, and day temps barely crest 50F with winds, scattered rain, and hail. Ice storms hit Tonopah and Las Vegas last week. Still, it's wide open for exploration and there's much more to see. The next week it could be into the 100's so I'll enjoy the cool for now.

The weather is ... well, to paraphrase Eisenhower, it's more like it is now than it's ever been before.
It's just plain weird. Extended drought. Albuquerque has only had five percent of it's expected rainfall so far, for the year. Don't know what to think.
