Shortly after Archer and A.G. Robinson broke the warp 2 barrier, a group of scientists tested an idea... the combination of Zephram Cochrane's warp drive with an Alcubierre drive, an engine that had been proposed but never really built due to the fact that Cochrane's engine got made first. Piloted by thrill seeker Maximillian Holtze, the engine was slapped onto the hull of a warp freighter. The Great Experiment flashed into history... as the ship was never seen again after it broke all known warp records at the time before vanishing from sensor range.

(just a concept I thought of on the fly.... liked the idea of the 'Great Experiment" being a usual title given to new engine systems.) use your imagination on what happened to the ship and poor Captain Holtze.
