they really are! Β I've discovered a pair that nests on top of a metal shed - don't know if it is the same ones, but I've seen geese sitting on a nest there for 3 years now! Β Sure wonder how the little ones get down, and where they go from there (as far as I know there's no real water anywhere really close there's a small creek about a block away from both sites but there are also busy streets to cross )

That does sound like a mystery...but clearly they are faring if they have been doing it for 3 years...I guess they just find it safer to nest higher up. :dunno:

They may be Canadian Geese but I've never seen any of them act like this at home! How crazy!

I'd never seen them anywhere more exciting than on top of a boat house we were wondering how the babies got down!

Ok, now I've seen everything! Great capture Ruth. Love the coloring in this shot and again, your focus is superb. This shot is definitely one for the "Ruth's Believe It Or Not" book!

They're still hanging out in the tree! I think there is a nest down in the cavity - we've seen one hop down inside...

Ah no worries, they're only attending a training lesson in rock climbing - a sport that has recently become rather fashionable among them.

Wow, I didn't realize they were so nimble.

That one on top is doing quite a balancing act.

LOL! So true! I saw them again today and the one on the bottom dropped into the hole behind it...I think they may have made a nest

You are more than welcome! We need to do it more often as we always have fun with you!!

Here's what says about eagles...."They are great scavangers and thieves. You should read Ben Franklin's opinions on the Eagle. He thought them to be throughly nasty characters and favoured the Turkey as the national symbol.
I intended to mention the idea of a food source but forgot it.

At my former station, I used to feed them each winter. It was common to have several dozen sitting around the house, day in, day out.

Unlike vultures which are really woodland birds comfortable with dense forest, Eagles require fairly open areas and they hate landing in vegetation more than 6 inches tall.

A carcass is worth staking out, maybe setting up a blind."

And that where he is they put washtubs up on poles for the Canada's to nest in that would be a sight!!!

We saw one way up on the top craigy part...thought it looked so odd that we turned the car around to document it! Only after a few minutes did we realize there were three others up there too Geese (geese's? geesi?) feet aren't made for that kind of perching

bear48 In reply to kayaksailor [2010-02-24 17:42:46 +0000 UTC]

we see them in trees around here all the time

The water is to sallow to keep the foxes and coyotes away

I can picture them up on a flat roof of a boat dock or something similar but this tree was just WRONG! Their feet aren't made to hang on that way

says they see them in trees all the time as the water is too shallow to keep away the foxes and coyotes! Makes sense

lightrae [2010-02-24 07:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Now tell me true. Wouldn't you be up there too if you had wings?

BTW, Canadas will readily nest in raised structures. In some areas they put big ol' wash tubs on poles. They make secure locations, safe from nest raiders like Raccoons and snakes.

Great capture.

kayaksailor In reply to lightrae [2010-02-24 18:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I would

I can see them up on flat roofs and in washtubs but their feet just don't bend right for trees tho it does make sense to be up there!
