How to make a “Bento Box”!Since I’ve been asked by more than one person to make a tutorial for a bento box, I decided to oblige. But, knowing I would not make one any time soon, I decided to at least give you something and draw one. Okay now, I’m not very familiar with the inches system, but I measured everything the best I could so it is as precise as possible.
I spent the entire day making this tutorial. I thought it would take me days, but it only took me five hours. I could not send it sooner because my internet connection refused to let me online, lol. I truly hope you will enjoy this brand new tutorial and that, should you try it, you will tell me how it went. I made it as easy to follow as I could. Just remember that this is mine and if you use it on your own website, I would appreciate if you would tell me before hence.
To make your Bento Box, you will need:
-A few Popsicle sticks (Standard size)
-Wood glue (or white glue)
-Balsa wood (if you don’t have balsa wood, keep following as I have another solution)
-a utility knife (or a mini saw, but the utility knife works just as well)
-acrylic paints (red and black or whatever color you want for your box) and paintbrushes
-glaze (optional, but it would look much better)
-masking tape (if you can get your hands on the blue type one, it would be best, but ordinary beige one is fine too)
-a ruler (for obvious reasons, lol)
-Toothpicks (optional, it’s if you want to make chopsticks without cutting another piece of Popsicle stick)
STEP #1
First thing you need to do is to cut the rounded tips off the Popsicle sticks. (You should need about 3 sticks for the next step). BE CAREFUL! You need all of your fingers and I don’t want to be responsible for injuries, lol. Once the tips are removed, the sticks should be about 10,5cm (4 3/16”)
STEP #2
Once the tips are removed, you will need to cut two pieces of 4cm (1 5/8”), three pieces of 3,7cm (1 1/2”) and one piece of 2,7cm (1 1/8”).
STEP #3
a) You will need to cut a piece of balsa wood of 3,7cm (1 1/2”) by 3,5cm (1 7/16”)
b) If you do not have balsa wood, it will be a little more complicated… You will need some more Popsicle sticks. Again, as you did on STEP #1, remove the rounded tips and cut four pieces of 3,5cm (1 7/16”). With one of these pieces, you will have to cut off, a 0,7cm (1/4”) piece large. The small part that is left, you can throw away of keep for another project or whatever!
STEP 4#
a) Glue all the pieces together, just follow the pattern on the drawing, onto the balsa square and put tiny pieces of making tape at each corners so it remains in place until the glue has dried.
b) Assemble the sticks you’ve cut on STEP #3b together into a square, and one that part is dry, then you can assemble the rest of the box as shown on STEP #4a.
STEP #5
a) Well, it should look like that!
b) Or like that if you follow the second option to make the bottom of the box
STEP#6
Now that the box is completely dry, you can paint it. Personally, I like the black and red look. Wait until the paint has dried, then you can glaze the box so it is nice and shiny!
STEP#7
a) To make chopsticks, take a Popsicle stick, cut a piece of 0,7 cm (1/4”), by 4cm (1 1/2”). Then cut on the long side the piece in two. You can paint those as well.
b) If you don’t feel like cutting a Popsicle stick again, use toothpicks, but they won’t look as good.
Now, all you need to do is think of what you want to put into your brand new Bento Box! If you put polymer clay into it, don’t worry, the paint and glaze should not react to the heat in the over. It did not do any difference for me…
I hope you will send me your comments and show me your work if you try to make one!

You can use larger pieces of tape than shown on the picture, if you find it easier. It's not that tough. If "I" was able to do it, anyone can, lol
