Description
Ok, this painting is huge. I've spent sooo many hours on it. It's a painting I did for art class. It has a lot of symbollism and stuff. Let me explain:First off, as you can see, they are in fact, flying bird cages. Ironic, no? To the left you can see a storm coming (moving to the right), so that's why all the bird cages are flying away from it (with the exception of the top right one, which is tring to come to a hulting stop, and the one that has no clue where it's going because it's covered up). Every object inside the cages represents something in a regular bird cage, but enlarged. So, the food is represented by sunflower seeds. Then the water is up top, the little stink the bird sits on is the giant tree, and the little tinker bells the bird plays with is the huge church bells in the top right. The cage closest (the angry bird) is the pet bird itself enlarged (into a hawk). Everything is cartoony in this painting (the style), on purpose (because you would never see flying cages in real life, lol). This whole piece is ironic because you'd think the bird and the rest would be free, because they are flying, but they really aren't because they are locked up in cages.
Many reference pictures were used. And I used many wing tutorials (some found here on DA!) for the wings, thanks guys!
People asked me where I thought up of such an idea. I told them: "Well, I had to think up an art project idea, so I was sitting down one night, staring at my bird inside her cage (she looked so sad), then I got an idea of flying cages. Then I elaborated on the idea to get what I have today!"
You can see close ups of the painting, and also a shot with me in the picture (ugly day lol) for size comparison by clicking here:
[link]
Personally, my favourite section of the painting would be the top of the cage, and the bars around it: [link]
(PS: no critting, because I've worked too many hours on this to change anything. x_x Plus, it's already done and I do NOT want to change anything on it, haha)
Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas.
I hope you enjoy it as much as everyone else at school seemed to! Tehehe. Thanks for viewing!
[update] Something pretty cool.. This painting as well as my self portrait got to go to the City Hall Art Gallery and is on display for about a month, representing my school.

this is crazy because I'm illustrating a book about a little bird in a cage. This is so awesome I love how people so greatly relate to birds trapped in cages..its sad but true, and I'm guessing that was one of the first reasons we chose to put birds in cages.

Hey, I wanted to let you know that I love this painting. I saw it every day in art class (p.s. I go to your school) I had always wondered who painted it. Mr Travis always raved about how much he loved it and that if we ever got good enough to paint like that, then there was nothing more he could teach us.
You should be very proud of you're work and should defiantly keep it up with the paint. I don't know how you managed to create this work of art with the paint and brushes provided in that art class, or did you bring you're own? Well regardless It's a beautiful painting and again you should be very proud. Did you get to keep it or did Mr.Travis keep it?

Thanks! You go to Trimble/went to trimble too?? What grade are you in now? I'm not at Trimble anymore though. Actually, I used the school's paints and paint brushes, heh. I miss art so much. I got to keep it, hehe. It's at home. I really wanted to bring it with me and hang it on my ceiling of my dorm, but it was too big lol. Did we ever meet at Trimble? lol

Ya we met...sort of. Remember Ashley Gillcash? Well I'm her little sister. My name is Kayla and I'm now in grade 11 at trimble. I had thought you had graduated but I wasn't sure to where. On to bigger and better thing's I suppose. hehe
Well where did you end up going, like what are you studying? Did you go with music or did you stick to art, or both? Weren't you going to study philosophy or something like that?

Ohhh, cool stuff, I remember meeting you. I didn't know you were on deviantart! Yep, I'm in Montreal at McGill studying music. It was a tough call between art or music, but music just had a calling for me.. lol. But I don't want to give up my art, so I'm thinking of taking an art elective sometime, possibly at Concordia (big fine arts university right across the street from McGill). How's Trimble this year?

Trimbles great this year as always I guess. I'm pretty sure Mr.Travis still misses having you around. hehe. What are planing on doing after University? And yes If I were you I would most definitely go to this art school. I think that even if you decide to stick with music you always have art to fall back on...not that you'll need something to fall back on or anything, but just incase you have a change of heart. So what is you're main focus with the art that you do now? Would you go for painting, or computer and graphics design? Whatever the choice I would suggest going for the class if you can find the time. So what are you're main classes this year? I wouldn't know what you'd study in a class room when you're going to school for music like you?

I have 4 possible career options after univeristy... Well, first I want to get my masters after my Bachelor, then possibly my PhD. Either of these professions (or more then one) would be awesome to have: Film composer, professional harpist (touring), university professor, playing in a professional orchestra. I think it's possible to be the pro harpist, uni proff and play in a pro orchestra, all at once, because that's what my harp teacher is doing now! so I guess i'm just aiming for some kind of cool career in music. I'm thinking of minoring in something.. not sure yet.. but I want to take an art course or two through Concordia if I can.. I heard mcgill students do it. I don't think my heart will change from music, but it's good to have a well rounded education.
Right now my focus on art is... none right now.. heh. I don't have time for it.. but with the time I do, I draw digital art. It's quick and easy and a fun time killer lol. All my classes are related to music, except one this year, which is my non-music elective. I'm taking Jesus of Nazareth. Interesting course. Right now I'm in history and counterpoint (writing music from the Renaissance). Comparing to non music courses, history is like.. well, history, but I compare it to English (because we have to write an essay and just study lol), and counterpoint is like math. Yea. You have any ideas what you want to do after high school?

After I submitted I thought "OMG I could have offended her!" *writes appology* Maybe one day you could sell it but right now, keep it around for awhile and admire your work.
I stare at my art all the time and feel proud of some pieces more than others.
It depends on how well I think I did.

Wow.. I wouldn't part with it.. Sadly, paintings are only REALLY worth a lot after the artist dies. *shivers* Don't DIE! You're too awesome.
The ceiling might be a good place for your painting.
That way you could look up at the sky through it. Metaphorically speaking.

D: I'm beyond impressed. First of: its nice to see artists do different things once in a while...it always brings amazement of how well artists are able to render a picture that's outside their usual field. Second of: i can see the effort clearly...everything is so smooth and well planned out. I'm rather fond of the background (one reason being I'm unable to do them myself)...it looks like you're able to do bgs like these both in traditional and cg. The idea is great as well..its a pity you didn't elaborate more on the meaning (your description mostly...described...not explained, or maybe i'm just dull XD). Great job, Kay!
My only complaint (not a crit...at least, don't take it as one ;3) is the colorful paint smudges at the bottom...all those different colors there are really distracting, but what can you do with no correct sized scanner? xD I leave you with one question: When I try new things (I'm going to assume this is one of your firsts), I usually learn something or discover something I'm able to draw that I never DREAMED of being able to, did you discover anything?
π: 0 β©: 1
kaykaykit In reply to l4smt [2006-01-25 12:56:28 +0000 UTC]
The elaborating of the meaning is your job. ;3 It leaves the opinion wide open to the viewer (just like 'what could be under the covered bird cage' and 'what does the storm represent', etc).
lol, the colours at the bottom is what the painting was resting on. xDD I totally forgot to crop the painting once I scanned it in. x.X haha.
Hmmmm, did I discover anything... I discovered I love clouds and to draw clouds (I loved clouds before xD But I didn't know I could draw them with paint with such realism). Hah, I redid the clouds (just part of them, on the left side) 6 times until what you see there. My art teacher had to help me, I was helpless. x.X Then he showed me an easy way to paint clouds, then I got the hang of it. X3
Thanks for the crits and comment! <3 Glad you liked it! Hehe
