Description
errr, it's originally done for CGTalk's Daily Sketch Group forum, topic 'Apollo' with the time limit of 50 minutes. When I reached my 50 minute mark I thought, hm this has a potential, so I spent way too many hours more working on this. I couldn't really bear painting this for much longer, because I seem to have a very short attention span, or something. Anyway yes, it's a bit cheesy, but hey, it was only an overworked sketch. I'm sure there's some sloppy parts in this, something I would fix had I more patience. So yes, this is Apollo, god of the silver bow, distant deadly archer, the eternal kouroi etc. etc. It's kinda funny yet disturbing how he ended up looking more like a Las Vegas male stripper than a Greek god, but ah well.

EDIT: due to many comments/crits I enlarged his head and expanded the right side of the canvas a bit.. and that's not without a lot of prodding from Oz XD

It's not everyday to see such soft features, not everyday at all *__* You rule! This is awesome, such a beautiful artwork, He is really God-like, and what a wonderful work you've made with His face..and that hair...and the background!!! ^_^ <3
I'm in love with His beer tummy *pokes* aww, very Hellenic in the style indeed ^__^ That girl in Pulp Fiction was totally wrong thinking that men with round bellies look like guerillas XD Sorry to call it a beer belly, didn't mean in a bad way, it's just the Ancient Greek people loved beer, or so I've heard ;3

Where's his twin, you know the one who had to be his mother's mid-wife when she was in labor with him? I think that she would look really good, with the way you did him. *pinch pinch, nudge nudge* Though have to agree, he's hot!!!

I've never heard that Artemis had to be his mother's midwife while she was in labor with Apollo. Where'd you hear that?
I'm also 99.7859867458658465843247% sure that Apollo's older, anyway. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

No, Artemis was born first and then Apollo was born. The reason is that Artemis was born as the moon was setting and then as the sun rose Apollo was born. Some say that Artemis lead Leto to Delos and then Apollo was born. I heard that from several places. Several books and several knowledgable people. The possible reason for the majority of people to believe Apollo was born first is that many of the myths known today came after the matriarchal society fell and the patriarchal society rose. And actually, Artemis, of all the gods and goddesses had the oldest and longest mythological lineage, dating back to Mycenaean and Minoan Crete and evcen before that to ancient Turkey, then known as Anatolia. Don't think about it too much, it'll make your head hurt.

That's very nicely done. What I like most is his face/hair, and the overall lighting.
As to him turning out to look a bit like a stripper: I 'd say it's because of his pose. The way his hips are tilted is somewhat, well, suggestive. The slight inclination of the head adds to that, too. There's nothing wrong with that, since it's purely a matter of choice, but -if- you wanted to make him look more divine, a more defiant pose could have taken you there. Just something to bear in mind if need be.

Hey Eleni! Thanks so much for dropping by and watching me
the tilted hips - I tried to mimic ancient Greek sculptures esp in the classical period onwards - most of them, esp the kouroi types, have some kind of contrapposto, but I did mix and match my references, with a mixed success!
Thank you so much for your crit - I'm not sure if I'm going to paint Apollo again, bt the next time I do I will bear it in mind!

Lol, masochist? Yeah, sure!
Itβs just, I donβt know how to explain properlyβ¦
Well, it sounds very ridiculous, thereβs a boy that Iβm in love with (and I know he will never look my way) and when the first time I saw him he reminds me Apollo, with his gold curly hair, and since this moment I found Apollo everywhere like if he was pursuing me, thatβs why I said that heβll torment me.

yeah, I understand that feeling it happened to me a lot when I was younger...but then again I was so lacking in confidence..
I'm sure you'll be fine if you start talking to him who knows he might be unexpectedly friendly
anyway hope things work out for you

Nice painting. The close up is very enlightening for me. I always work too hard at getting sharp lines and details, but the close up look almost blurry. Like soft focus or something. Also, the lighting is amazing.

Darn you, Kay! I'm never going to catch up to your amazing skills!
Lately, I've been feeling a very strong urge to paint traditionally, but it's so expensive! Not to mention, I'd need a lot of space . Ah well....maybe I'll be able to find the time and money to indulge in that this year, we'll see
. I'll prolly have to work with good ole' acrylic paints since I doubt I can afford oils.
Digital painting is something I try to avoid, but I do only because it's easy (less messy, etc). I find it hard to fall in love with digital paintings because there's some special quality that's missing from traiditionally painted artworks. However, your style works really well in your digital painting.
Bah! I've got to roll up my socks!
