I like how this goes. It reminds me of the Lucario lesson in PokΓ©mon Art Academy (black + lowest opacity setting = shading done simple).

Well, GIMP can actually be very similar to Photoshop... but that's if you have a mac. For Windows, it's just similar to Paint.NET with some extras.
