Aina noticed Sapphire looking sad recently, and asks her "What's wrong?"

Sapphire's response leaves a chill down her spine. Her mate is abusing her. All he does is eat fermented marula fruit and laze around. He pays no attention to her unless it's to yell at her. Aina had flashbacks to her first mate. The same thing happened to her, as what's happening to Sapphire right now.

Aina was afraid for the lioness she secretly loved. Her mate was a higher ranking male, and she was afraid of what he could do if she left him. She had no family, so if he had her booted out of the den, she would have no where to sleep. Sapphire felt that her only option was to work hard and raise her rank, so that maybe she would be able to stand on her own four paws.

But Sapphire had another option. She could leave her mate for Aina, as Aina had her own cave and land within the pride. However Sapphire didn't know of Aina's feelings and was too afraid to confess. She did not want to lose her only friend.

If only she knew.

Aina is older than Sapphire, as seen by the wrinkles around her eyes. Sapphire is 4 years old and Aina is around 8. The age gap doesn't bother either of them.
