A long time ago, I came across `RainCookie 's amazing guide to making cross stitch patterns in Photoshop. It even works with CS5! But if for some reason you like tedious work, this tutorial can help you too.

Anyways, this is the best I could come up with. I based it mostly off what I learned from [link] but modified it for crafters and pattern makers. Their version is probably considerably faster though, come to think of it (mostly I just learned about the marquee tools mentioned from it).
