Description WHEN CREATING YOUR FLASH FILE, ALWAYS CHOOSE ACTIONSCRIPT 2.0 NOT THE SYSTEM DEFAULT WHICH IS 3.0

I'm sorry, comments have been disabled D=
I really just don't have the time to answer everyones questions, I get so many everyday, and 90% of them are already answered in the tutorial. Sorry to anyone who needs help, maybe when I have some free time I'll enable comments again.

Okay, well so many people asked me how I made my Create A Wolf- [link]
So I decided to make a tutorial ^^

I SUGGEST YOU START WITH THE GO-TO BUTTON TUTORIAL BEFORE THE CLICK & APPEAR

I’m so sorry about my rambling. I’ve tried to make this tutorial so even beginners at Flash =may= find it useful. But it really would help if you know some of the basics about Flash before you attempt this. Also, I have to stress, I SUCK at explaining things without being there in person.. so since that’s impossible, this is the best you’re gonna get xP

Only for people who have Flash. You can download a free trial on the website though (I think).

---

actionscript for go-to buttons here for lazy people:

on (release) {
gotoAndPlay(NUMBER);
}

well, because it says advanced crit...
There is a much more optimal way of switching instances. You could have a movie clip with a stop command on the first frame, and have the first frame empty. Now frame 2,3,4,5, and so on contain all the different options of clothing drawn over the character(which is still on the main stage). When you press the button, you use the with command to choose the movie clips instance and tell it to go to the specific frame you want it to. This way you don't have a ton of objects on the stage with 0 alpha, which when making more complex animations, drastically reduces performance and frame rate.

Hmm i'll try and make it a little simpler. If you use the "with" command, you can choose where your commands are directed to. So if I had a button telling the flash movie to jump forward 5 frames, I can direct that 5 frame move into a movie clip. Say if the movie clip's instance name was "mClip", and I wanted to make mClip move forward 5 frames, I'd apply the following code to a button:
--
with ("mClip"){
gotoAndStop(5)
}
----
The syntax may not be entirely correct, but you should be able to catch my drift X3 (haven't coded actionscript in years).

I love you. (Sorry for that, I accidentally pressed the enter button : / )

Thankyou so much for the awesome tutorial, easy to understand and beautiful images too. : D

I want to know that if I were to make more than one category of thing to appear, what would I put on those buttons? I know I don't hide everything since upon clicking another button would kill the previous settings, but...yeah : /

Thankyou~

OrexChan In reply to KCoyote [2008-02-24 15:22:55 +0000 UTC]

It really doesn't seem to work for me but does for everyone else, so would it be okay if I just ask you here?

On your create a wolf thing there are categories such as main, markings, tail, etc. then for example under 'main' there'd be buttons such as fur and nose. For the thing I'm trying to do (colouring a face), for example a Hair category--I have this:

on (release) {
gotoAndPlay(3);
hair_lavender._alpha = 0
hair_blue._alpha = 0
hair_green._alpha = 0
hair_blond._alpha = 0
stop();
}

Where frame three is the one with the individual colour buttons. On those I have the alpha scripts, and upon testing/exporting the movie the categories hair and eyes seems to work--until I click on the skin category, and it doesn't change. I made more categories to test out what was wrong, but all those didn't work either (clicking on the colour changes doesn't do anything). I check all the scripts and they were exactly the same as the working ones, so I have no idea where I went wrong.

Also, after clicking the working categories (hair and eyes), all the things from the non-working categories show up.

Thankyou if you'll consider this~

KCoyote In reply to OrexChan [2008-02-24 15:32:06 +0000 UTC]

okay, there could be a number of reasons why this isnt working for you. I'm also wondering why you have "gotoAndPlay(3);" on the 'hair' category, when those alpha codes should be on each individual colour button- not the 'go-to' button. Do you have an email address I could send the Flash file to? I think it could help you out a lot more than my guessing lol

haha not a nooby question at all xD
After you open it up, choose 'Flash File (Actionscript 2.0)'
If you use an older version of Flash, then tell me what the options are so I can give you the right one :]

IdAnthony In reply to ??? [2008-02-22 15:22:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the Flash Tutorial. I am a self-taught flash user, though you wouldn't know it looking at my gallery, and so have different bits of knowledge here and there. A layout of the basics is always helpful.

One reason your files get so big is that you are messing with alpha. I have read that you can change the tint and that it is much smaller in file size. The downside is that there is no "zero percent alpha" or "invisible" option, but white can be just as good for the colors perhaps? I suppose you would have to keep the lineart as alpha channels though. Just wanted to share the idea. Perhaps I'll have some time to try it out myself soon.
